Head Unit Malfunction

Hey all,

I've been working on my install in my 8 (speakers, subs, amps, bluetooth, ipod integration, ....the list goes on) and everything was going fine, but then at the very end I did something really dumb with my JBL amp (I was crazy tired) and I'm pretty sure I fried the internal amp in my base HU. All of my displays work, head unit operates, but no dice on sound of any kind. Oh, and no, it's not the fuse.

I need to replace the lower half of my head unit, but I'm not having any luck finding one used (thought I'd found one, but it was the cd transport when I need the 'audio unit'). I'd really rather not replace it through the stealership if I can help it, so my question is: does Mazda use the same HU across multiple car lines? I've been trying to search for info on this and have checked the stickies but can't really find a good answer. If I could find, say, a wrecked Miata or something is it possible to swap the audio unit out of it?

Alternatively, if anyone can point me in the direction of a used base HU I would be much obliged. I'm loving the car and I love the sound of the rotary, but wow some music every once in a while would be kind of nice....this is all I need to be done with my install....for now!

Thanks!

for the price your going to pay -- you might as well get the corksport kit and put in an aftermarket HU.

I considered getting the corksport kit and the new Pioneer AVIC-D3 for a few days, however I have 2 issues with this. First, the cs kit has not yet proven reliable (I know this may change with the new version coming in now). Second, and more importantly, the car's an '07 I picked up on a 3 year lease so I'm going to have to replace it anyway sooner or later. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.......

After a few more hours of research I've found that with Mazda's modular design pieces can be swapped out..... example: you can take a 6 disc changer from a Mazda6 to replace the single disc player in the 8. However, I can't seem to find any info on whether or not you can also do this with the main core. Anyone know if you can use the core from an '04 Mazda6 for use in an '07 RX8 without repercussions to A/C, steering controls, etc.? The few pictures I've seen show a radio that is physically identical down to the pinouts, but I know looks can be deceiving. Also my understanding is that if this is possible I can still plug my auxmod into this and it should work fine. I'd appreciate any info from anyone who can tell me anything to the contrary.

might want to shoot an email to kilroy's (it's like a pick-a-part) but mostly newer cars...

I did a check on their website and they don't list one.. but they could either keep and eye out for you or suggest a better place to look.
