is the center console one piece? If so how do you change your existing radio to a aftermarket Head Unit?

You become very artistic amd you also wear the fact that your character display is going to look a bid bland.

You're becoming brand/model locked by the manufacturer to a fair degree.

Personally with is something that really gets my goat. Can you imagine in you had to "up and move" to another suburb to update you hifi, or alternately rebuild two rooms and put your bathroom on the other side of the street!

The flexibity of upgrading you car sound system has fallen victim to "cabin art" and potentially ergonomics...

...be interesting to see someone getting the buttons on the steering wheel to operate an Alpine head unit and also still look good in the centre console (for God's sake talk to me if you do!!!!!).

You can't.
Unless, of course, a manufacturer comes out with a model made specifically for the RX-8. You can guess the likelihood of that :D

It's not that you can't. The audio units themselves appear to be standard double-din size, so standard equipment should fit. The console cover itself would need some custom modification, and there are no kits currently on the market for that.

Many moons ago when the Ford Taurus had a similar setup with integrated climate controls in a unique layout, there were kits that relocated the climate controls and allowed for the mounting of standard equipment. I expect this to be available in the aftermarket soon, especially since the Mazda 6 has the same exact setup (meaning there is a bigger market than just RX8 owners).

And as soon as it comes down in price a couple hundred bucks.... I'll jump on board. Any ideas when Metra or Scosche will make something? That would really bring price down.

Price is the deal breaker.

Corcksports.com already imports a double din kit.

Question is can you compete with this price point.

Otherwise, nice job on resurrecting a really old thread

My friend called me last night. He has the same head unit issue. His setup sucks that's why he ended up crashing some stuffs out there.
