Gauge pod...

Do you love this gauge cluster? Don't want to pay $1,500 for it? Well... RSW Motorsports has a 3 guage "Meter hood" that looks just like it. Available in black fiberglass (FRP) or carbon fiber. Sorry gauges (60mm) are not included.

FRP: 19,800 JPY
Carbon fiber: 29,800 JPY

A) It's JDM (Japanese ONLY website) and it's not listed yet.. hardly anything is yet... the site looks new. http://www.rsw.ne.jp

B) Price is listed above in Japanese yen. Want dollars? There are many conversion pages out there... use a search engine and convert it.

You have side curtain air bags.... what happens when they go off. The person who did that lives in Japan. JDM cars don't have the same standard options as USDM cars...

Roughly $180 for the non-CF one, $270 or so in CF, assuming the conversion tool I used was correct. Still not exactly cheap. Didn't the $1500 include the Defi gauges? That's not a cheap set of gauges.

For the 1DIN custom dash unit that rotarygod is making, people are paying like $250 I think. It's definitely worth more. The stock piece costs like $160. The handmade sub box he's making will run like $250 and is certainly worth like at least $400 if Alpine or somewhere was selling it. Now that we have it in perspective... $180 is pretty reasonable. You don't have to use Defi meter gauges if you are on a budget. Thus your total can roll in under the cost of the MS unit. If I have time, I may see what kind of prices I can find on gauges for example for people...

I'd need to get a better idea of quality though before paying that. As for the gauges, every time I'd look at it I'd imagine those Defi gauges from the MS car....

That's you. Me... I'd think of how much money I saved over the poor saps that spent $1,500 for the MS Meter kit and mine doesn't look any different.

As I'm not an import/export, parts seller or anything. There's not much I can do to help you with questions of quality and fit.

I'd imagine that quality is good though. Not say you can't find junk in Japan, but Japanese consumers are picky about the quality of their purchases, so it seems hard to believe that this is a total POS.

For that matter, if its good quality (i.e. when installed looks like it belongs there, like the MS kit) I'm sure you could find the Defi gauges on your own for substantially less than $1500. It still won't be cheap, but it will be a lot cheaper.

I've seen plenty of really bad plastic and fiberglass interior parts, but I don't know that any of them came from Japan.

I agree bureau13. There are some really horrible pieces out there. The only thing I can say is that someone would just have to take the risk and pick one up.

The Defi gauges are NOT cheap. Prices vary depending on the model and type of gauge you want, but it's like $100-200 a gauge, plus the control unit. BUT... there is still some savings over the MS unit...

Where can you get one... that's a good question. As this is the golden week holiday... makers and import/exporters alike are all on vacation. I am not sure who, if any, of the import/exporters would be interested in picking up this piece. If enough people are interested, I might be convinced to do a group buy... either with or w/o gauges and controller... not both.

Even if I picked one up and posted pics of it... I don't have an 8 to install it in. So...

Well... first the bad news

I contacted RSW regaring this piece and they say they've stopped production because of fitment issues. Apparantly, it was requiring some work to get the piece to fit and it wasn't fitting well. So they are redesigning it now.

The good news...

Unlike RMagic, when I asked about a volume discount, these guys said once they've got it redesigned, they can send me some pics and are open to giving a discount. So depending on volume, you guys could get this for a bit less or a lot less than the original price... I'll keep you guys posted on this one...

Slight update...

Nothing set in stone yet, but... I am looking at trying to sponor a group buy for... RMagic 1Din dash panel, Ashtray Gauge panel and when it's ready the RSW 3 Gauge Hood. Are people still interested in any of these? If not, no problem...

Possibly the 1DIN and the ash tray panel, or barring that, the 3 gauge hood. So all of the above, sorta.

Well... I just got word back from RSW. 30,000 JPY for carbon fiber. 20,000 JPY for plain black. The final price will vary depending on how many we order. They'll send me pics of the new unit as soon as it's done and ready to go.

Here's a brief update...

On my end... I haven't heard back from RMagic yet with the shipping size and weight info I need. Waiting to hear from RSW when they finish the new gauge panel.

As far as the thread goes... the admins hid it, because it was well going into official group buy status and I hadn't received permission yet. I've PM'd and emailed Ryan, but no word back from him yet. So I'm holding off on saying too much more until I hear back from him.
