I found navteq dvd's for PC's at store shelves for 80 bucks. I still need to find current maps in sdal format... if you got newer ones i can make quick burn and see how they turn out.

As somebody mentioned a couple posts ago, the nav system is really aging. I'm actually eyeing a new Double din deck and the Corksports kit, then replacing the pop-up LCD with a newer 7" lcd and wire it to the new unit... so nav and movies can be played at the same time. current costs of these are about $1200.00 if you factor in the 400.00 double din kit.

Just joined the club as got my RX8 last night.

Impressed so far... It's a 2004 Japanese import and the SAT NAV is in japanese. Does anyone know what to do to convert this to Uk spec. And the heater doesn't work - just in time for the Xmas freeeeeeeeeze!

even tho its copy protected isnt there some kind of software to make you able to burn it anyway? like copy written dvds, you can download dvd 43 for free and that enables you to copy movies that are copy protected =)

don't need special software; a straight copy onto a dual layer DVD+r works fine

Hi to evrybody. Just hoined and drop off for a hint.
I am in italy but i own a USA version 2005 Rx8. I got it and no map DVD came with it.
So far, looking in the net, i saw that also Saab's 93 model is using SDAL formatted maps. And i know a friend used a Saab93 2008 map disc on a Mazda 6 and it is working... maybe that can be the source for the SDL files....

Anyway, no one knows what model of Navigator the 2005 rx8 is mounting?
WIthout DVD i cant even see what firmware version i have mounted of the software

2005 Mazda RX8 NavTech North American SDAL DVD Model "U0115-0070-302 SDAL DVD Pkg., 2002-1" is the sticker on the back of my DVD package. These are the original 2005 Maps. Mazda - North America Map DVD Version 2008 Catalog # U0115-0070-806 cost $199 from NavTech.com. I haven't tried to copy mine. The DVD Model on my PC is: HL-DT-ST CDRW/DVD GCC4482 Bus Type: ATAPI. I have no "specialized" DVD software. Hope that's enough.

I have another need I hope you can help me with. I have a 2004 RX-8 with the orignal sound sstem. The firmware in it is Version 9.53. I want to add an aux port or MP3 plug and have been told by the local audio shop that I eed Version 9.55 or higher. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Many thanks.

sure this question has been answered on here before, i dont care, you'll help me I'm sure, even though i dont really need help here. Can you play regular DVD's in that device and see it on the nav screen and hear in through the stereo? Haven't tried yet but would be nice to know for bragging rights...you understand

Hi There - I know this is an old thread, but I just got an 04 RX8 and would LOVE to get a copy of both the Firmware Upgrade CD and/or the 2008 Map version. I am hoping that by now someone has figured out how to copy these. Apparently some of the 04's (even if built in '03) DO have the later firmware. I will have to figure out which one I have.. However - in the meantime, I would be willing to pay a fair price for these.. I just think that 199 for a 2008 Map is a lot! Thanks very much - Frankie

If those of you that got discs to do the update from Mazda have done your upgrade, is there any reason you still need the disc? Might you be able to lend it out? Since you need to leave the map DVD in for the Nav to work, then the Upgrade CD must be used and then removed and maybe could be used by someone like me! I would surely pay and/or return the disk. Or did the dealer have to do "something" to the DVD drive in order to make this upgrade work? Can anyone with the upgrade working tell me the part number of their DVD Drive? Mine is:
CN-VM4360A but I'm not sure if some of those are with the newer firmware and some aren't?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello, just got an 04' RX-8 GT. My son discovered a DVD ROM drive in the back seat console. There is a Navteq version 1.7.36.3 dated 2005. I called the 1-888-NAV-MAPS number on the disk, and they said I would have to go to NAVTEQ Maps for any update. I am an I.T. guy so I got to thinking that maybe there are some 3rd party hacks or firmware "improvements" that can open this thing up, like I did with my LinkSys router using DD-WRT??? Or, if someone can give me a link to a .bin image with the firmware disk and the newest map disk available, that would be a good start too!

I actually purchased a newer DVD Drive from someone - so I still have the same old "Maps" CD but the firmware is newer - not sure how much better it really is.. I paid $100 I think - or so - it works and everything - didn't come with even the old map dvd - I had to use mine.. the split screen is okay - the way you get the addresses put in is different - I think I liked the old way better! But - on the whole it's good.. Sorry I didn't see this before - I tried to get on this site a bit ago and couldn't manage to.I would love a new version of the maps, if someone has one.. although maybe only once did it not have a road I needed.. there are a few roads missing around where I live - but the next version probably didn't have them either!
