Nope. The free disc is the firmware (operating system) upgrade. The upgraded map disc dated 2005 (2004 data) costs $149.

I got done upgrading my firmware. It doesnt have a map-disk, so if you're like me with an old map disk... you're stuck with it.

The new firmware is cool. Replaces the input mechanism with a keyboard that simply dims the letters as they are eliminated.

Adds a setup option that draws dots in a breadcrumb sort of mode to show you where you have been.

Interface is a bit quicker and snappier.

Text is a bit easier to read, some font changes on the map.

Other than that, I dont see any difference.

There are split screen visuals, which may be part of the new map software which I have gotten and am satisfied with. Navtec said there was a 30 day guarantee if you were not happy with the new map solftware - you could return for refund except for shipping. There are many more addresses, at least in my area, north east.
I have noticed that before when you were to enter a major road, the voice just said, make a right or left - now it tells you to make a right onto route 287south for example.

I've seen many 'copy protected' disks 'backed up' to protect the original of course. If it can be written by the manufacturer it can be duplicated, by an end user. My point is that if you've got the right software and the right hardware you can copy it.

Hi Cool Blue,
The info provided is correct. The upgrade to the firmware does support the enhanced functionality described. For me it is a good upgrade - I think the changes in the graphics and audio are beneficial and I've found GPS tracking to be both a little more accurate and more robust when in areas I had tracking loss in previously. I haven't bothered with the update to the NAV disc yet to see what the combination of firmware upgrade and nav CD accomplishes.

Does anyone know what copy protection scheme they are using? If it uses normal DVD encoding or normal anti-movie pirating encoding then there is plenty of software out there that can handle that. (Though I don't know if they will still work if they don't find a VIDEO_TS file)

Hardware should be any drive that can play a DVD(Though some are more iffy than others).

Question Bump

If anybody has an SDAL DVD, I think i figured out how to 'migrate' the data from any version release, and build an .iso standard disc.

Meaning:
  1. Should be able to extract any data from other car models in SDAL format.
  2. Merge it with the current System
  3. This includes MAP updates for the BMW 5 series

I noticed Navtech has 2007 updates for the BMW 5 series owners. If anybody knows where to source this in iso format. I believe i can get the SDAL data migrated to a custom .iso so it will work with 2004-2005 Mazda's.

if anybody has any links or leads on where i can find the USA Maps in SDAL format please let me know.

Note/Disclaimer:

I've been doing the research into this possibility, SDAL is an open source format, but the 'DATA' is considered owned by the providing party. If the data is proprietary, then distribution of this .iso will not be possible with the DATA, but i will be able to create an instructional document if not an app with a GUI interface to help with the extraction process.

So in short, SDAL format is free for anybody to use. Data 'map information with a formated database linking long/lat numbers with address and POI' is the deal breaker that would make free distribution of a custom .iso not possible unless the source of the map data provides permission.

Oh, Since the current dvd is broken up into 3 regions, I believe I can get these seperated into 3 .iso's so a Duel Layer Disc 'DVD-DL' is not needed. And might be able to include other languages to fill up the unused space. ie: spanish, german, french etc etc... Basically the European voices...
