Factory Antenna Issue/Question

Factory Antenna Issue/Question
Here is my problem and some background and maybe somebody with familiarity can shed some light.
Six months ago there was some burning/melting of wires along the center floor because of a clogged cat. Until that point stereo worked as it should. Dealer pulled all my aftermarket stuff apart when replacing carpet, wiring, etc.
I get the car back, take a half hour and get everything reconnected. Everything works except......terrestial radio. It would physically work but I had no reception. Now, bear in mind I have an HD tuner connected to my Kenwood HU. For three months after getting it back I dealt with no terrestrial radio as I had satellite anyway. Finally I've decide to get it looked at.
The conclusion we came to was that the factory antenna was bad. This was determined by plugging a portable antenna into the HF tuner and voila, I get AM and FM reception. Of course once the antenna goes in the trunk I lose AM. Bummer but expected.
Ok, I do a little searching on here for factory antenna and I learn that the connection to the antenna is a little clip on the rear window. I go to it, take it off, put it back on. I then plug the factory antenna back in to the HD tuner. Good news, I have FM radio. Bad news, I still don't have AM. Now bear in mind I do listen to news, traffic, and sports on AM so there is value to me in it. Obviously the factory antenna isn't COMPLETELY bad.
Question: Does anyone have ideas or is there another connection for an AM antenna or a ground connection I am unaware of?
