I have a Sony MEX-R1 which seems to be an ok unit.
Only thing is it is coded for region 3 and I would like to be able to play region 4 and region 1, so it would be preferable to be Region free.
I live in New Zealand which is region 4, but I have a lot of region 1 DVD's.
I'm sure this unit can be changed to be region free, but does anyone know the coding to change this unit.? or where I would find the instructions to do this.
I have tried searching for instructions, but haven't found anything yet.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Did you try replacing the coils, plugs and wires?
