Do you mean an LED strip or just an LED bulb. As mentioned previously, an LED bulb doesn't work if you've got a spare tire. The tire just covers up the light, even without the stupid white cover on it.
I went with the cathodes over an LED strip because the cathodes were less expensive than most LED strips I could find and I figured they would give better all-around lights, since some LED strips tend to not have a very wide illumination pattern.
Unfortunately, I broke one of the cathodes, so I will probably go with an LED strip in the future, since I have found some with a decent spread for a decent price. The main point is just to get the light source relocated so it wasn't blocked by the spare.
