I wonder how this will affect us used RX-8 owners.

I got mine as a lease return from a Mazda dealer. And my vin is _VERY_ low. Less then 1000. I definatly want the new maps, and I'd love to get the new software as well.

If you get a mazda symbol when you start your nav then you have the newest firmware. If you don't then you don't.

Wild guess here, but could there possibly be a correlation between the lack of new MAPS and Mazda sending out the newer O/S to owners of the old one?

If NavTech (or whoever) programmed the maps based on the newer software, there may be a possibility it isn't backwards compatable . It would be a rediculously stupid thing to do, but entirely possible with three different manufacturers dealing with the same system.

I know it's a long shot but why else would they be sending out the newer o/s to people who don't have it? - We've had people calling everywhere to try to get updated MAPS with no luck (except for the "It'll be out in a month" response). Now they're possibly just giving away software?

Don't get me wrong, I have the old o/s and would like the updated one. It just seems odd that they may offer a free upgrade for something a typical owner wouldn't expect to be able to get AT ALL (new o/s), yet hold off on selling a product that the typical customer would expect to be able to buy routinely.

The sad part about all this is that when the new DVD becomes available it will already be outdated since it is based on 2004 data.

The Mazda service rep I spoke with yesterday confirmed this. When pressed about the contract dispute between Mazda/Panasonic/Navteq, the rep said that there was a compatability problem with the older units. The Navteq manager (Jeanelle) also confirmed that older RX-8s will need an update disc provided by the dealer.

I haven't made my calls today to see if the story has changed.

Story is confirmed by my service associate, Staci B. See below:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello Kevin,

Thank you again for contacting Mazda North American Operations. I
appreciate the opportunity to respond to you and feel free to e-mail me
if you have any questions.

I just received an answer to your question about when the updated map
will be available for your vehicle. Mazda is going to be sending RX-8
owners, with the navigation system, an update to the operating software
(not the map data) free of charge, and this will enable you to then
order an updated map disc from Navtech. This operating software update
will be sent out around the end of July or early August. Again, this is
not the actual updated map, only software to update the operating
system in your vehicle, so you can then order the updated map from
Navtech.

Again, thank you for contacting Mazda. It has been my pleasure to
assist you. I hope this information is useful. Please feel free to
reply to this message with any further questions or comments.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Of course, this could just be another tactic to get us off their backs for a couple more months...

Exclamation

Another F#%$@ing DELAY!

I called Navteq to followup on my Tues call where I was told the new map CD would be available in 2 weeks or so. The rep who answered my call today said it wouldn't be out until the fall !!!

I immediately asked to speak with the manager from Tuesday's call (Jeanelle). She was again very helpful in explaining:
The map CD Navteq currently has (and has had since last year) is 2 years out of date. While Mazda has agreed that Navteq can sell that CD, Navteq doesn't want to release it now because they have a NEW map cd containing updated data (through the end of 2004). The newest CD won't be available until mid-July. This is being done becuase Navteq doesn't want to release(and charge $) the 'old' CD then turn-around a month later and relase an updated CD (and charge for that again).
When asked, Jeanelle thinks the price will be $199 (same as other map CDs).

Navteq will be the only distributor of the updated CDs, but the Mazda can purchase them to stock in the dealerships.

I want to DEMAND that Mazda provide the updated CD free of charge, but now they've set it up so that Mazda isn't even responsible now.

Is there any way for us to get satisfaction - specifically from Mazda?

If it comes down to it, we could all chip in 2 bucks or something, buy 1 cd, and spread to the masses.

Well at least they all seem to have figured out a solution to the problem and we should be able to get new maps on a regular basis, best news yet with this entire ordeal.

Just an FYI, I emailed Mazda USA (through their web site) and got the following response:

Hello Mark,

Thank you for contacting Mazda North American Operations. I appreciate
the opportunity to respond to you.

Mazda is going to be sending RX-8 owners, with navigation system, an
update to the operating software (not the map data) free of charge, and
this will enable you to then order an updated map disc from Navtech.
This operating software update will be sent out around the end of July
or early August. Again, this is not the actual updated map, only
software to update the operating system in your vehicle, so you can
then order the updated map from Navtech.

I have also updated your information in our database, so when the new
operating system does come out, Mazda will know to send one to the
mailing address provided in your e-mail.

....
So it looks like it might be a good idea if you have a used 8 to notify them so you get the update!

Ok guys just to let you know I was the first one to recieve this info about the free os updates and I am a Used 8 owner. I was told that as long as your info is updated with MNAO that you are the owner and your home address then you get the upgraded os disk in the mail.

I finally got around to testing a Ford DVD in my 8. I tried a new Ford Expedition Navtech Map DVD and got the message "Can not read disc." Are there people on the forum that have actually tried the Ford DVD and it worked? Personally, I think Mazda is our best bet.
