But iPods are the most common MP3 player, if you are going to build for one, that would be the one.

 

Absolutely- the key is to keep this project simple and platform agnostic. I don't have an ipod, and don't ever plan on it, but I have several devices in the works that would leverage a basic aux-in hook into the HU (RCA Lyra, CarPuter, rear-seat video, Bluetooth handsfree car kit, mp3 cell phone, etc).

Here's to hoping OverLOAD can get that connector sourced soon... :D

 

I agree with the website idea wouldn't take long... My use for the aux in is for my car computer. Can't wait to give some shots of this, its much better then you have seen before.

 

Just another person dying to get a solution. I'll buy whichever comes out first. Overload's or Dimensions.

Oh yes, one more comment I have. This funny serial port that you have to use to update the firmware on this device. Wouldn't it be smarter to use a USB port instead? So all of us with modern computers can update this device as well?

All I have if FireWire and USB, only my really old beige computers have old mac serial ports.

The point is, I'm sure there are many people who don't. I'd rather not have to dig through my old computers and set one up just to upgrade this thing. Plus mac serial is DIN9 so i'd need to get an adapter to whatever funny serial is being used currently.

 

I'm sure it'll be standard 9-pin serial or at least easily adaptable to it. And if for some reason you don't have a serial port, there's these (link) .

 

Many of them don't... no modern Macs have RS-232 serial ports. And more and more PCs are doing away with them, especially notebooks.

 

Oh yeah -- I've tried one of those on a Windows XP machine. It didn't work, because the software that was trying to talk to the serial port only knew how to talk to the "standard" COM1: or COM2: -- those USB-to-serial adapters usually pop up as COM3: or higher.

 

No Macs EVER had RS-232 ports, except I think the new Xserves do, the rack servers. But older macs had a different style serial port. But that USB thing is another $25, so now we're up to $75 for this box, assuming its price is still $50. I just think it would be better for everyone if it was USB instead. If your computer doesn't have USB, it must be real damn old. Plus if overload goes with an RS232 plug, when he comes out with a firmware update, he's going to have a bunch of people without one begging him if they can mail the module back to him to be upgraded :-P

 

Yes, the Mac serial port was RS232. It did not use the D-sub 25 or 9 pin connector is all. A simple adaptor cable is all that is necessary to connect from the standard 9 or 25 pin D-sub to the Mac-specific connector.

Yes, USB would be a good choice if Overload can implement it easily.
