Custom 09 R3 gauge pod

Bought a new 09 R3 a little over a month ago and wanted to add some gauges. Thought the ashtray was the same size as the extra one I had from my previous 05 GT but to my surprise it wasn't. Decided to remove the lid from the ashtray and fiberglass a face onto the back half. It's not done yet but will be finished sometime this week. I am also working on a 10" custom fiberglass sub box for the rear.

Had to redo the pod due to some technical difficulties. Just installed the finished piece in my ride tonight. Not sure if I'm going to keep this setup or not. I decided to use the hoods but it was a PITA to get the shifter panel back in place. After a half hour of gently pulling and tugging I finally got it in.

It's already painted to match but its kinda weird how when I took the pic the flash made it look a lot lighter. Could be cause I put about 5 coats of clear coat on it. I'll take a pic during the day tomorrow to see how it looks compared to the rest of the trim in natural light.

Had a local paint supplier mix up a batch of VR paint for me. Reworked the gauge pod and painted it to match the car. Next I cut strips of silver and gunmetal vinyl decals and used them to accent the dash and pod. The decals stick to the dash very well as long as you've never put armor all on it. Also it beats painting interior trim cause if you scratch it you can easily replace it.

Got bored this weekend and ditched my dual gauge pod in favor of a custom triple gauge pod. Took me about half the time to make the new pod. Didn't even have to paint it as I was lucky enough to find some gunmetal vinyl decal laying around the garage. It's almost a perfect match against the R3 wheels.

I decided to make a new pod. First I modified the dual pod I initially made by securing two gauge hoods face down so they are angled towards the driver. After covering it with painters tape I poured fiberglass resin over it to form a mold. Once I seperated the mold, I applied tape to the inside of the mold and brushed on two coats of resin before adding fiberglass mat. After the resin dried I was able to pop out the pod. Although it needs some fine tuning, I think the end result turned out pretty good. Gonna finish sanding and hopefully paint it on Friday.

Added pictures of the mold I made.....enjoy

I'd like to hold on to it for a bit. Besides it needs to be sanded and repainted....got some scratches on it when I seperated it from the mold.

Finally finished the pod. Painting it was a PITA due to the humidity that was in my garage. After stripping it down three times I decided to go a differnt route. I mixed some paint in with fiberglass resin and poured it over the pod. Before it dried I dusted it with a light coat of paint.....damn it worked. The pod is almost an exact match to my R3 wheels....enjoy

Wish I had a way to mass produce these.....lol
