I so want to bite the bullet but I'd like to know a date...!!!

I've told myself no bullet biting till I get back from my wedding in September.
Once that's over I can bite all kinds of bullets and start new projects.

FYI... Installer.com has the high gloss version on their site now, and are taking preorders. $179.99 plus shipping. He said he has placed an order, and will be shipped on a first come, first serve basis.

we're getting closer...it's on 2 sites now and it pops up all over google now too :D: If anyone has any specifics that haven't been covered yet please let me know, I'll actually be in contact with Metra reps in person this weekend at the car show I'm competing in (Texas HeatWave), I can blast them for y'all if ya' like :)

alz0rz 07-17-2008 11:39 PM

The guy from installer told me sometime in the "next few months" it should be available... not very promising.

nuke0907 07-18-2008 05:19 PM

the press release said it retains the clock and adds customizable text. how exactly would we change the clock or input the text?

I believe it's done through the HVAC controls somehow, the 6 kit does the same things, just not sure how right off the top of my head. I wouldn't trust a website Alzorz, I'll see if I can't get a more specific date/timeframe directly from Metra this weekend at the show. I got to meet David "Fishman" Rivera today, he even complimented the cars in our booth, freakin' sweeet! :D:

alz0rz 07-18-2008 11:42 PM

ay.. I thought as much!!

I'm dying to know an ETA right now so I can plan my days off work to do all this in one swoop!

It's up, no pictures though. Looks like maybe a pre-order?

P.S. What are the sizes for Double Din they're looking at? I've seen a lot of kits for a lot of cars not fit into the dash.

P.P.S http://www.12volt.com/index.php?opti...temid=88889047, there is the press release for those interested.

Ask this buddy to keep you informed and if he can come through let me know!!!

SirZyrion 07-21-2008 12:37 PM

The President of my Racing Team here is a licensed retailer of electronics, including car stuff, so I'm checking with him right now to see if he's got any ways to get the kits also.

canaryrx8 07-21-2008 07:57 PM

spoke to the metra guys this weekend, couldn't squeeze a definitive date out of 'em, but I did hear the msrp on the kit is supposed to be around 130.00 bucks. Some of these places are charging a premium and taking pre-orders already it seems, so just be weary of their price if you decide to go that route. I'm expecting an update any day now from my other contact so we'll see. :)

Greenblurr93 07-21-2008 08:14 PM

yup, buddy and his friend who works for metra couldnt even get a date... all he got was "30-90 days"

Beautiful. I can wait another couple weeks for that kind of price. That is definitely pricing it into mainstream!

racens 07-21-2008 11:55 PM

i know that it was discussed that the ambient temp and clock functions will be retained but i was just curious if anyone knows if the steering wheel volume/mute/track change controls will be retained as well

XLR83N 07-22-2008 02:47 AM

was stated before that you need to buy an adaptor to use the steering wheel controls, check the last few pages for more details
$130 is so cheap! i just hope it works with auto climate control, or one that will work with climate control will be available soon...

MIA-RX8 07-22-2008 01:34 PM

i have been waiting so long to hear about this!!! you guys are awesome. 130 beats 430 any day! metra web site is down right now but i will keep checking back. again thanks for all the great info. i am so excited!!!

Greenblurr93 07-22-2008 01:38 PM

metra site has been down since last week.... metra doesnt know whats going wrong and the techs are having a hard time fixing it..

Davey's RX-8 07-22-2008 07:13 PM

Site's up right now. Looks good. In fact I may consider biting the bullet. Of course that I want the new Kenwood DNX-8120 may have a lot to do with it as its unlikely they are going to make a motorized version with those features.....

Is this thing ready for prime time to be ordered?

cks796 07-23-2008 02:19 AM

http://www.metraonline.com/products.aspx?s=7510

They're up on the site, don't know if you can buy them yet.

When I called Metra and asked about the auto controls they told me not to expect anything anytime soon.
They said they did not expect it to be a big money spinner and it took months to get the electronics part working so they were not too interested in putting in the time and money for the overseas models. And the current faceplate does not work on right hand drive units either.

So it looks like a US only kit for now.

But if you bite the bullet and try it anyway let me know how it works.

cks796 07-23-2008 09:16 AM

I think you can probably get a converter from another company if you look around, Metra is just releasing the conversion kit for the dash, not anything else.

Awwww crap! I've been waiting around for this kit too, not knowing if they would make a version for the auto climate controls (from UK).
O well, gonna have to be the corksport then :|

MIA-RX8 07-23-2008 11:32 AM

i just talked to sean r. at sales with metra at ext 2229 and he said that it will be around 300 or so and not avalible till around sept. but when i told him about rx-8club and about canaryrx8( who he said said he knows and thinks his audio is awesome! props to the texas boys) he said that if we can get a business or tax license for rx-8club we could pre order and he said he would be able to get us a "retarded" discout on them. he said about 15 to 20 orders would be able to do it. i think he will get alot more than that. now i don't know who the head person is here on rx-8club but maybe this is something that can be done. any questions just drop me a line and i will e mail you back with my number. this sounds like a great idea. i am definalty down to do it. he also said he thinks the doulbe din is going to be the biggest sale. i hope this works....

ahh i see, ive been waiting for an email from them for lik eover a month now lol!
cant see hwo they think it wont be a big money spinner, they just need to look at these forums, and as canary stated before, the new model rx8 has auto climate controls.
i also dont see how the faceplate is going to be any different LHD or RHD, but how would i know. if i got something like i could return it if it dont work/fit id give it a go, imagine how good it would be (for them and us) if it does work :D

FastRX8 07-23-2008 12:33 PM

Well, so far we have 3 completely different prices for this thing.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that I will lean towards believing Canary. (Not just because he has the best color/rim combo for an 8)
Mainly because he's been talking about the Metra kit long before it was around.
Tons of people gave him a hard time about it. He swore it was coming, and now it's actually going to be available.

Whatever his sources are, they seem to be the most reliable. Not only that, but his $130 target is also the best.
I sure hope he's right again. :)
