I already tried to contact autotoys to see if it is available for immediate shipping.. no response.

Me wants!!!

canaryrx8 07-07-2008 08:31 AM

It's not shipping until the end of the month, I got your im last night too, sorry for not responding. I haven't heard any more news on it from my source so my guess is they're focused on getting it out the door now. :)

TheWulf 07-07-2008 01:22 PM

Very cool... looking forward to this!

TragicallyHip 07-07-2008 06:18 PM

Me too...

I'm just wondering what the story is here. I know it's just a rendering, but the divider between the two single-din slots is confusing me as to how it will be released...
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x...k/MetraKit.jpg

I already have a nice single-din flip-out mp3/DVD player... But I would like to upgrade at some point to a nice flush-mounted double-din unit...

So for the time being, the single-din Metra kit would the one i'd be after, but if i ever wanted to upgrade, would I actually have to purchase the double-din kit?

Or is it actually the same kit, but comes with different mounting hard-ware?
IE: single-din comes with smaller mounting brackets aswell as a single-din pocket.... And the double-din comes with just the double-din mounting brackets?

alz0rz 07-07-2008 06:35 PM

This turbo2 module.. the factory harness will plug into?

Right now I have an AUXin unit from car2pc that gets sounds to my PC.. anyone have any ideas how I could go straight from the factory harness (bose amp?) to the PC for a Carpc application.. other then stripping and rewiring it into RCA plugs and getting a beefier soundcard? This is for when I completely get rid of my stock radio if/when I get this Metra kit.

from the pictures it looks like the single DIN kit has the pocket molded into the replacement faceplate, so I'd think if you ever upgrade to double DIN, you'll need to get the double DIN kit too.

TragicallyHip 07-07-2008 07:26 PM

Yeah, thats what I thought until I studied that rendering.

I don't like the idea of having the pocket on the bottom and the h/u on top. It works for a regular cd/mp3 player, but not-so-much for a flip-out DVD player as it looks much cleaner to have the screen centered in the dash when it is open (only covering up the pocket) as opposed to being in the top slot and covering up the 4-ways and the vents :(

Ideally one would think that the kit would be interchangeable so that if you DID buy the single-din, you could choose if you wanted the pocket to be on top or bottom (like a typical stereo install) or choose to purchase the double-din mounting brackets seperately and mount a double-din unit.

The pocket actually being molded into the bottom may deter me from making a purchase until I get rid of my single-din h/u and save up a bit more for a double-din...

Can't you get "universal pockets." Then you could turn a double din Metra kit into a single din temporarily? I can't imagine they are very expensive.

This is kinda what I was thinking too. I've seen a few universal pockets tha you could probably use with the double DIN kit. Just install your single DIN in it, and then put the pocket on top of the flip out.

Maybe put your single flip up for sale and hunt down a double DIN?

canaryrx8 07-08-2008 01:34 PM

If you like I can get some clarification on the single din through Metra, most of the kits I've seen the "pocket" isn't molded in, maybe they did this with this one or maybe not, it's really hard to tell from the ad and it's also possible that ad was put together before the kit was even finished etc. I'm hammered today at work, but if I get a few minutes I see if I can't get you some detailed info on that.

firebirdude 07-08-2008 02:38 PM

The universal pocket kinda sucks. Odds of you getting it to look decent enough for our picky RX8 asses is slim. Good enough to just hold you over 6 months until you get the double din? Probably.

raphy3 07-08-2008 08:06 PM

Is anyone planning on trying to put a touchscreen monitor there in the double din for use with a car PC? I'm wondering if this'll be possible. It'll be much cheaper than the upper dash piece that people are using to mount touchscreens in, which costs about $400.

Yep, I will.

Oh you definitely have to put up a thread on your project with pics and all when you start it :lol2:
If this ends up being halfway doable I am gonna go that route too.
Right where that giant kind-of-ugly-but-not-really-that-bad-and-sorta-cool circle looking control panel for our current radio sits is a perfect place for a screen.

I will be subscribing to this thread to keep track of the product release to one of the national chain electronic stores. I visited a couple of them this afternoon and find that they will only install what they sell. Thanks again Canaryrx8

joyridevr6 07-13-2008 07:51 AM

Subscribed. Can't wait.

svensweden 07-13-2008 11:31 PM

=)

Think we should get this thread stickied.
Defiantly the most important info I've read on Interior fixes in recent memory.

flyboyindy 07-14-2008 05:02 PM

OK... so like the rest of you, I was really excited to see the Metra kit... This will be without a doubt the best solution yet... the problem has been... WHERE AND WHEN can I get one?

Since there has been no real info, I decided to send a note to every one of the account reps on the Metra site.

The Good News: Many of them wrote me back!

The Bad News: Not one of them told me the same thing!

All of them were very friendly but here were the responses I received:

-- We are sorry, but there currently isnt a Metra product available for your car.

-- Sorry to say we wont be shipping for another 3-4 weeks.

-- We will be releasing closer to November/December. We are creating a completely independant HVAC board, and it has not been through quality assurance yet.

-- You will need to preorder to get one.

-- Please preorder at your local car stereo installer as these will be produced based upon product demand.

So what I got from that is, they will build this if there are enough preorders made to make it worth while. If that is the case... I would suggest we all get to our nearest installer.

I know this didnt help much... but just thought I would share just the same.

canaryrx8 07-14-2008 05:16 PM

Wow, that makes absolutely no sense. They've blitzed all the major media folks with the kit being shipped/released at the end of this month. My source (one of the engineers working on it) even told me end of July, sounds like Metra has some issues with inner company mail or something :D: It's only the 14th, when it's the 31st and things are still quiet, then I'll be going on the attack, until then, I'll pretty much just leave those guys alone as they all told me end of July etc. :dunno:

ZoomZoomH 07-14-2008 06:40 PM

patience guys, patience!

We need part numbers to special order. Your local Metra retailer isn't going to have any more (infact less) info than we have.

Tigerfootball 07-15-2008 12:41 PM

I wonder why no one seems to want to read through the threads anymore. heck, just look at the first page and you get the whole press release, and what looks to be part numbers on said press release. just be patient, I know I am excited about this, but come the end of July beginning of August and we still haven't heard anything or it hasn't bee released yet, we know canary will do what he can and get more info out of Metra about it.

flyboyindy 07-16-2008 11:23 PM

Just offering information guys... Dont need lectures on patience...

FYI... Installer.com has the high gloss version on their site now, and are taking preorders. $179.99 plus shipping. He said he has placed an order, and will be shipped on a first come, first serve basis.
