Cool Cds..

Seem to work well in WAV format, and make sure to 'close' the cd.

all of my burned cds are mp3, and they all work, you will not have a problem because the song is actually recorded, hence the minute ratings on the cds

POOMan,

Please confirm:

You saying I can play a CD full of MP3 files on the stock single CD player in the RX8?

That means I can have 100+ songs on one CD. Does the player read the song/artist name, etc or maybe play lists? (That last one might be asking too much)

Who needs a changer than.

Please let us know.

Thanks,

Claude .

P00man might be saying that, but if he is it's incorrect. The stock single CD player can not play MP3's (there is an MP3-capable player available that replaces the stock CD).

What P00man probably meant is that he burned an audio CD from MP3 source files -- most CD players will play this type of CD.

jtimbck2,

I have heard about the MP3 player option but do not know the details on it. Is it a hard drive or CD player that is MP3 compatible?

Also on the point of the stock CD player: If one has a bunch of MP3 songs, can one use Roxio to convert them back to .wav format yet keep the small file size of the original MP3 file and thereby get 100+ songs on a CD to play on the stock CD player? Is there any additional loss of sound quality as a result beyond the normal comprimises of converting to MP3 in the first place?

Thanks,

CLuade H.

Not really. MP3 is a highly compressed format, while WAV is (nomrally) not. You could record WAVS using mp3 compression, but the CD player in the car, unless it's specifically made for MP3's will NOT work. The standard CD player will only read CD audio. WAV's worked for Doctor, because his burning software automatically formatted the audio data into something the CD player could read.

So unelss you shell out for the mp3 player, you cannot use any kind of compression on your audio.

I can give a lot more info on this if anybody's interested. Just let me know.

Thanks Genom,

I for one, would like to know more.

I do not burn MP3 as a rule due to quality loss of oudio signal. (Please, no flaming me on this).

I have an RX8 on order (Oct/Nov delivery) and I did not order the 6 CD player because it seemed a tad expensive. However I am looking for a solution that would allow me to have more than the 10 to 12 songs available to me in a regular CD.

Hence my curiosity here.

I have a computer, I have Roxio 6 and lots of CD's. Is ther no way to end up with compressed audio that would work on the single CD unit in the RX8? If it is a matter of burning a number of songs on my PC to MP3 (196kbps) in order to obtain compressed songs and than further convert them into an acceptable format for the RX8 CD player, which format am I looking to convert the MP3s into: .WAV or .CPA? and is Roxio the solution? Can this evenn be done?
Your insights are appreciated.

I guess I could caugh up the additon $550 for the changer if no other solution presents itself.

Claude H..

It's a CD player that can read data CDs containing MP3 files and play them (as well as play standard audio CDs).

No, when MP3s are converted back to .WAV format, they are uncompressed -- .WAV has no compression capability. It's just raw audio signal data with a header that gives some information about the sampling rate of the data, whether it's mono or stereo, etc.

Try having your brother switch brands of CD-Rs. Burnt CD's play fine in our TL. I used to have some problems with some brands, but found that the Fuji cd-r's worked well, so I've been sticking with those. After searching on the internet, I found out that supposedly there are only a few companies that make the CD-R's for all the brands out there and they use different dyes or something different. The ones made in this one Taiwan factory don't play on my DVD player, but ones made in a different Japanese factory will play perfectly fine. So I always look for a brand that says 'Made in Japan' on the label (like the Fuji CD-R's) and I have no problems. Give that a try.

What speed did you burn the CD's at? Try burning one at 1x or 2x and see if that helps.

In my experience, the slower you burn CD's the better... my current 10 stacker is much more resilient to vibration with slow burn speeds.

I have now read many more posts in this forum about the MP3 player and see that it does read ID3 V1 or 1.1 tags. What a relief, I thought for a moment that all I would see are track numbers and little else.

My car is in production, a VIN# TBD and I have to make a decision btwn stock Bose CD player in GT package, MP3 or CD changer.

I think I will ask the dealer to have the factory install the MP3 player as 1 CD can hold about 150 songs, good enough for me.

Seems I might not have too much flexability with random music playing.

Although I will probably have folders setup on the CD in Artist/Album structure which the MP3 player may not handle all that gracefully BUT it will have to do.

I see a Mazda price of US$ 345, correct?

This can be a factory install, right?

I read somewhere that it takes the player a long time to "load" an MP3 CDs info, does anyione know if this is a one time delay, when you first insert the CD into the player or does the delay occur each time you play the CD, after having powered off the car and restart it?

I am trying to avoid any options that would be done in port as that seems to cause a few weeks delay in delivery.

My dealer is trying to work it so that my options (Starkes, Rotary accents & mud guards fore and aft and the MP3 player on a Titanium 6MT, GT) be installed either at the Factory or at the dealer.

Although I do not use MP3's at home, it is no biggie to create a batch for 1 or 2 CDs for car use.

Based on your comments so far, a couple of test burns to make sure things work correctly is called for before producing a larger number of MP3's

Thanks,

CLaude H.

Burned CD's

The RX-8 has no problems with burned CD's - I have a 3.2 TL and burned CD's will work if you burn them at a very low copy rate like 4X. Anything faster - it won't work.

Unless they have recently changed the available options list, the MP3 player is only available as a self- or dealer-installed accessory, not as a factory- or port-installed option. Thus your car will be delivered to the dealer with a standard single-disk player, and you or the dealer will remove the standard player and replace it with the MP3 player, leaving you with a standard CD player left over which you could try to sell back to the dealer or on eBay to recoup some of the cost of the MP3 player. The dealer will charge you a fee for the installation over and above the cost of the player itself.

As for the initial load time - once it has read the directory structure it doesn't need to do it again unless you eject the CD, disconnect the battery, or blow a fuse. It starts playing from the point it left off, with only a couple of seconds delay to fill its buffer.
