The best would be the audiolink from www.therpmstore.com.

The one that displays text on the LCD is sold on Ebay. Forgot the name, I just refer to it as the big white ****.

Both posts are in the Interior,Audio, and Electronics threads.

The "big white ****" is also available here so you don't have to go through eBay. To me the text display was a must so it was a no brainer. Install pictures start here near the bottom and continue on to the next page. A couple issues have been reported here and there but overall I am really happy with my choice.

I'm curious why you would pick the audiolink as the best? That was on the top of my list until the other one (with text display on LCD) came out...what advantage does the audiolink have over that one?

I don't think you can control the iPod from the iPod on the the display version. You must control it from the stereo controls.

But if you have the text display why do you need to control it from the iPod?

Because it only shows playlists and doesn't let you randomly browse around the artists. And if you're want to find a specific artist, you have to disconnect the iPod (which is otherwise locked out), find what you want, push play and reconnect.

AudioLink is the best solution right now, IMO, because it gives you the convenience of steering wheel and radio unit controls (for track switching) and you still have all the text and control you need on the iPod itself. There are few other adapters similar to the AudioLink, and they are in the same category, but I don't know what the exact differences.

I too was hopeful for the display-the-text solution, but it's still inadequate. I will only use a solution that locks out the iPod if it provides a good alternative for navigating the iPod fully with text.

Here is my AudioLink setup.

No, OEM, IMO, has pretty poor usability. It only displays numbers, cryptic numbers at that, and locks out your iPod, so you end up trying to locate tracks "by ear."

What's the deal with this firmware business (i.e. needing 9.55 for the Audiolink). My 04 is a very early build. Like first off the boat kind of early...

I came across this:

A good option:
Xcarlink Mazda iPo
The Xcarlink Mazda iPod car kit allows you to connect your iPod to your Mazda factory car system without any loss of sound quality.

Features
  1. Connect your iPod to your factory fitted car stereo and enjoy perfect digital CD quality sound.
  2. Direct digital connection to the head unit resulting in superior sound quality compared to FM modulators and cassette adapters.
  3. Control your iPod or iPhone using the radio or steering wheel buttons ie. change track, change playlist, fast forward, rewind, volume etc
  4. Retain full functionality of the iPod or iPhone when connected (including click wheel). The screen is not locked in manual mode.
  5. Automatic pausing when switching to CD/TAPE/FM etc
  6. Will play when connected and pause when ignition/power is switched off
  7. No batteries required. The interface keeps your iPod fully charged at all times while connected
  8. Professional look as all wires are hidden and no cigarette lighter adapters required
  9. 3.5mm connection for connecting MP3/MP4 Player, iPod shuffle or any other audio device.
  10. Optional Bluetooth module available to provide a hands free car kit solution with A2DP technology for wireless music streaming
  11. Continue to use your existing CD changer
  12. LIVIO radio App

The Xcarlink iPod interface now works with the LIVIO car internet radio app. This app can be downloaded from the Apple iTunes store and gives your access to more than 45,000 AM/FM and Internet radio streams from around the world using your iPhone or iPod Touch.

When connected to the Xcarlink interface, the app can be controlled directly through your car stereo or navigation system and steering wheel controls, giving you a fully integrated internet radio solution.
Installation:

The interface connects to the CD changer port located on the back of your car stereo. On some cars, this can be reached from the passenger side whilst on others, you will need to remove the radio. Instructions how to remove your radio to access the CD changer port can be found through many online resources, car manuals or by a local installer.

Compatibility Information

The Xcarlink is compatible with and will provide charge to all iPod, iPhones and iPads with the dock connection including the new iPhone 5 (requires Lightning to 30 pin adapter which is not included).

Compatible with most Mazda models up to 2009 including Mazda 2 (not MP3 radio), Mazda 3, Mazda 5 (not MP3 radio), Mazda 6 (03-05 requires modification), RX-8 (Firmware dependant)

Please see the compatibility tab for further information.

Optional Accessories

Bluetooth A2DP Module - Xcarlink now features a connection for an optional Bluetooth Module. This enables it to be used as a hands free car kit system. Simply pair it with any Bluetooth enabled mobile phone and it will allow you to make or receive calls through your car stereo speakers. Also features a microphone for added convenience and optimum sound quality. Music playing from the interface will automatically pause when a call is made or received, then resume once the call has ended. In addition, the Bluetooth module allows you to wirelessly stream music from your Bluetooth enabled device to your car stereo.

3.5mm AUX cable - The 3.5mm cable allows you to connect any audio device to the Xcarlink such as an MP3 player, iPod shuffle, satellite radio etc. Please note that this cable is not required for use with an iPod.

Package includes
  • Xcarlink iPod interface
  • CD changer connection
  • iPod/iPhone/iPad dock connection cable
  • User guide
  • Specification
  • Dimensions - 8.9 x 4.4 x 2.2 cm
  • iPod cable length - 110cm
Interface cable length - 110cm
Hmmmm...... doesn't seem to say anything about displaying song tracks on radio unit.

Yatour Car Interface iPod iPhone input Adapter + Bluetooth (optional) for MAZDA RX8
Hmmmm...... doesn't seem to say anything about displaying song tracks on radio unit.

My previous ipod adapter displayed on the head unit. Really wish I kept it now.

It will not provide track info. You must connect to the Tape/MD connector on the head unit for that to work and not the CD Changer port.

I did some research on this last year, and couldn't find anything inexpensive that really did it all.....I bought the Mazda OEM ipod interface on ebay.....wasted $50. You may consider getting a new head unit which will cost more $, but it will do everything. I installed a Pioneer Avic6000NEX last year and have been happy with it - I have some pics posted on my profile.
