audio system - out of the car

Today I removed the subs to my car's audio system, and thought I'd show y'all what things look like.

Firstly, here's a pic w/ everything installed (I cranked up the brightness to help ppl see things)-

What you're seeing is the amp-rack/floor on the bottom, with a carpeted facade blocking off the front-half of the trunk (towards the seats).

The sides of the floor fold up, to allow removal - as seen here (with facade, and box already out)

Here's the box - notice the lip goes around only three sides. The subs sit facing DOWN - with the open edge of the lip facing the front of the car.

That's it. Pretty straightforward, IMO. I'm thinking about asking my wife to make a new enclosure for me; going to 1 12" sub (mostly for ease of removal and weight savings. If so, I'd gladly sell this very well-sealed 2 10" box.

That's it!

Did you ever try changing the direction of the subs?

Reflection increases the sound by at least 20%

Either down or back works the best.

In your case down could work very well I think.

My plan is to install a single 12", I have a single 15' that rocked my little neon back in '96 but I don't need that much besides that the box would have to be built into the car and I want the option of easy removal like your's.

I actually despised the dip in the trunk until I thought about where to install the amp and other goodies.

I've tried them facing up and facing backwards. Facing them backwards into the facade (and even w/o the facade) increases the 'cone noise' which is muffled by them firing downwards. Since I've removed the rear-deck speakers, I now put the opening side of the bottom of the box facing rearward.

Either down or back works the best.
The subs DO face downwards

I went ahead and put the 10s back in. Switching to a 12 would have just cost money; I figure I'll stay with 'good enough'.

If you need any measurements/ think any aspects of my stuff can work, I'd be happy to help.

So, lemme get this straight. In addition to the box, you have a floor mat or something that goes all along the trunk floor to allow the amp to sit in the trunk well as well as hide the wiring from it? Pretty spiffy. I like the look of that box a lot. That's pretty cool that your wife can build all of that stuff too. Those are W3's right? How did they sound?

Ah I missed that they face down.

I like the look of the facade and may utilize that approach. Right now I am working on getting the 4-point strut brace from Ultra Racing after I get that I will decide what room I have to work with.

What did you use for wood and other materials dmp?

I may take you up on that since you have a template already.

The biggest thing I like is that it is so stealth.

Agreed and if you wanted to hide the amp you could do that pretty easily too. I just cannot imagine the sound being any good with them facing down though, but maybe they are, I don't know.

Thanks - The amp is screwed to the trunk floor thru the carpet; it's not mounted on anything per se. Not the best possible solution, I suppose. The amp is covered by, and framed-out with, a 3-section piece of wood which covers everything to make a flat floor from the facade to the back of the trunk (back being 'towards the opening'). It's made in pieces to allow it to exit the trunk opening - note the one pic w/ one 'flap' folded up? To remove, I simply fold both sides like that, then bring the side of the piece nearest me, UP. Then, the whole piece just lifts out.

My wife didn't build this stuff - but she'll build the box for her f150, and the rx8 IF I change my set-up. She's VERY good with...uh...wood? :D

I think these are w3's...I'm failry unhappy with these 10s. BOOMY...where I prefer TIGHT bass, these sorta boom. If I had more amp, I'd replace them with a smaller box and find a good pair of the old ROUND Solobaric 10s...Heck, if I found a good set of old-skewl ROUND Kicker Comp 10s, I'd change out, too....and Lord have MERCY, if I found a set of Soundstream SS10R's??? yeah...I'd swap in a heartbeat.

BUT - I got everything fairly cheap; Cliff Designs Seperates up front, the two 10s, Zapco 4-Channel amp, Zapco Line-level conversion boxes boxes, carpet, install for about $1700.

Everything is made of MDF - and if you'd like me to template-cut a piece for you, I'd be happy to. I honestly enjoy the set up enough that I'd consider fabbing and selling all three pieces for people. If I have enough MDF left over from making the box for my wife's truck, I'd cut a facade for you for the price of shipping. A cheaper alternative is, however, to just have me TRACE it on a large sheet, so you can make your own.

I thought about making a cover for the amp-hole; and wire in a couple fans. Sometimes stuff falls down into the amp-hole when I'm carrying groceries, etc.

I was skeptical at first, too. I could convince you, but you'd have to sit in the car....lol I doubt video would do it justice. My wife says she can hear me turn the car onto our neighborhood's main street; about a city-block away.

Course, the 'boominess' I mentioned earlier may be the downward firing aspect? I dunno.
