Audio noobie needs help

Lemme preface this by saying I know nothing about car audio so any technical terms will take a non-stop flight over my head. I am looking to add a subwoofer, because the Bose system just does not have enough low end bass IMO. I don't want to "announce" that I'm coming down the street or anything but something where there's adequate oomph when listening to songs with bass. (I had a Kia loaner for a day which amazingly sounded better than our 9-speaker Bose setup.) Not knowing much about what brands are best, I went to Best Buy and they recommended a Sony XS 10'' sub and a Rockford/Fosgate 300I amp. Total including enclosure and installation is about ~$600. Is that a good price? Are these good components/will they sound good? Will I be ripped off? Thanks in advance! I didn't know what to search for as far as topics.

there's a ton of links for you to search.

if you want something simple without spending too much money, search for the infinity basslink. it's a sub with a built in amplifier. easy to install, cheap, and sounds great. it's not going to rumble your ears off, but it's a decent starting point.

Well, for comparison I'm going with an Alpine 5 channel amp with a Polk Momo 8" sub in the trunk to add a 'touch' of bass to my system--I have Infinity speakers all the way around though. Those components are sound, but I would probably get stuff from Ebay and have them installed--you probably could save maybe $100--especially on the sub. I had 1 10" sub pushed by a Crunch 800 amp in my previous Millenia S with the Bose system--it was LOUD. It was the loudest possible without rattling my trunk. You can always turn the sub volume (gain) down, but you may be better served by a smaller sub. Hopefully some cats that are more knowledgeable will chime in. I'm waiting on my capacitor to come in then I'll have my homeboy install it all this coming week.

Why is that? Cheap materials or just better sound quality elsewhere? The 10' i have my eye on is being discontinued, and BB is selling it for $36. Can't beat that with a stick...

With car audio, as with so many other things, you get what you pay for. If it's only $36, I'd say go for it, because if it sucks you're only out $36. However, it sounds like one 10" will suit you just fine. If you want nice stuff, JL Audio is my brand of choice, and they make some 10" subs that come preinstalled in enclosures. Going to cost you a little bit more. Again, if you search around, you'll find what a lot of other people have done to fix the bass problem in this car. You'll also find people like me and TRU681 that are just retarded about our stereos. :D

I totally agree with Scudrunner .You do get what you pay for. Also I do agree $36 is a good deal.Go with the deal & see how you like it because it only matters if it sounds good to you.If it doesn't work out, you're only out $36.Keep in mind that if you don't want to spend that much on it or don't know any audio shops for hook up, I recommend e-bay.They do have decent to actually pretty good stuff out there that is for a prettty price.Oh yeah, Sony uses cheap materials & also they never did make any decent speakers whether it's home audio or car audio.

Thanks for the quick replies, guys. I'm readin further into the boards and it seems like that Basslink may do the trick...rather than have all those components separate. It looks perfect for what I'm lookin for...nothing earth shattering but enough so the girls can give you a dirty look and flip you the finger. Nice!

I got a Sony 10" woofer, and can't say that I am unhappy with it.
(Haven’t heard an other brand in an RX-8 so can't compare)
But for the money, you got almost nothing to lose.

Sony calls their speakers "explode" for a reason!
