I took the console apart to install some accent LEDs and removed it at that time. It's relavtively easy. Remove the shift ****. Pop top the top of the console off with a electrical tape-wrapped screwdriver. Remove the two screws holding the ashtray in and voila, you've got access to it all. I don't think you can get to the bulb without tearing the console down.

There are lots of instructions around here. Any instructions related to the stereo (aux-in, iPod adapter, etc.) will tell you how to take the console apart.

Is the bulb different in the 2004 RX-8? I just bought a set of 194s from Advance Auto (It says 194 bulbs right on the package) and after removing my ashtray bulb, the end connector on the OEM bulb is about half the width (versus thickness) of my replacements.

I will post pictures if I can, but I can't fit my replacement bulbs in that connector at all. Any ideas?

I looked at the bulbs that Advance Auto sells and didn't see one that looks like it would fit. It looks like the same bulb that lights up the shift panel.

I'm currently supporting OIF and am nowhere near my good mechanics, so no one here has a clue.

Help!

Btw, please e-mail me if you have a solution. I can't check this site on government computers, so I need to do it on my painfully slow connection at my hooch. Thanks all!

Bulb Comparison Pic

Here's a pic attachment. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

P.S. Holy mac and cheese, the original 200K attempt and current 143K file uploads took about 40 minutes! - H

Thumbs up Shift Panel bulb

I used Sylvania 74LL.BP2. Found it at Advanced Auto Parts for $4.99 for a 2-pack.
