Anyone put a 1000w amp in yet?

I was about to purchase 1 jlaudio 12w-7 and a jlaudio 1000/1 amp for it when I called JL to ask a non related question. The technical guy pointed out that the rx-8 having only a 100amp alternator will probably not be able to power this amp as it draws a peak amperage of 80 amps and an average amperage of 60 amps.

I am dissapointed, I feel I am now limited to a much smaller system. Can anyone confirm or deny this from their own experiences?

He also pointed out that a cap does nothing for a jlaudio amp since they use regulated power supplies. Dips in the voltage will not affect the amplifier.

Does anyone know a good place to have the alternator rebuilt to provide more output?

you could possibly buy a capacitor and a small second battery. I fried my alternator in a 95 Ford Probe with a 1500W pyramid amp and two MTX 7000 12" subs. It may take a lot of the strain off the alternator, hopefully i am correct, after all, i am NOT an expert in the least but i have experienced a fried alternator due to running a system.

Experts feel free to comment........now.......

amp

I have a Jbl power amp, running 1200 watts RMS, and have had no problems, well I melted a few of the big round fuses, and had to go with a flat style, its pushing 2 10'' fosgate punch 3's, sounds great, too loud at times , but so far no problems, have been running it for about 6 months at least, good luck

FYI - -

A cap or several Caps will not stop the Alternator from Frying..

Its needs to be re built or a custom one made for that car ..

The max might only be 140 but its better than the 100amp stock

I have 2 10" JL-W6's with 500/1 and a 1 farad cap. I love bass but this system is ridiculously loud. I wanted the w7's but size constraints brought me to the w6's. I you get a well built box and dynamat, unless you want to seriously compete spl. The w6's will not disappoint you. btw, the 500/1 amp pushes the sub with ease.

1450 watts rms and more to come!

Just for the record I have now installed a tantrum amp which is rated at 1450 watts rms with a current draw maximum of 80amps.I have kicker 10" solo baric sub and a 1 farad power cap....Lights on/ac on and serious volume there is not a flicker of a problem.I am sure your proposal will be fine.I am planning a genesis front end install and have it from the horses mouth a good way forward with soundstage and getting the very best out of the fixed head unit.Once set up I will explain how it was done along with the results.
