i have never bought plates before but when i make them i use 1/4" plexi or lexan. this thickness should be good enough to hold a decent pair of speakers. when you install them just make sur to seal them good to prevent rattles. i use the rubbery foam style weather stripping it works real well and costs a lot less then dynamat type stuff

Do you put the foam where the speaker meets the adapter, or where the adapter meets the car...or both? This is something I didn't do, but need to go back and do.

I bought one from a local Tweeter. I had to dremel out the inside because it supported 4" to 6.5" speakers, so it didn't really save me much work. However, all the screw holes were in the right places. I would say it's worth it, esp. if that one is pre-cut for 6.5".
