Question 2 Alpine Type R

I have two Alpine Type R's 12" and I know a little bit about subs and amps. I was just wondering if someone would have a better idea than I do for what Kind of amp I should get, or if I should get 2 amps(1 for each sub: what my friend recommends) and if anyone knows which amp I should get for whichever way I should decide to go. I believe the subs are 500rms @ 4ohms.

No to the two amp idea. First verify if your subs are a svc 4 ohm, dvc 4 ohm or dvc 2 ohm etc. This will dictate the type of amplifier to choose. How are you going to integrate the amp into the stock stereo is the next consideration.

They are the dvc 4 ohm. they are the 1242d model. As for putting into the stock stereo i think it is put in with a line conertor.

with those two subs, you are going to need to use an amp that makes all its power at 4 ohms, or 1 ohm, in the case of the 4 ohm setup, most likely you will be looking at a 2 channel amplifier, and bridge the 2 channels together, and those being 500 watts apiece, that may be kinda hard finding a good 2 channel amp that makes 1000 rms.

other option is finding an amp that makes its power at 1 ohm, so most likely it will be a mono or sub amp. one good choice there would either be a diamond d6 1000.1 or a directed 1500d. both of those amps make upwards of 1000 watts continuous power, so they would be perfect for those subs.

the alpine type r subs are excellent in them selves, i have used them in a couple of my vehicles over the years, and have had no problems with em as long as the system was tuned right.

where are you from, i might be able to get you a really good price on either of those amps.

Running it at 1ohm for long period of time is not that great of an idea imho unless you're doing SPL competition which you're really not playing at 1ohm for that long.Running it at 4ohms bridged sounds alot better.

running at 1 ohm or 4 ohms wont matter to the amp as long as the amp can handle the impedance. now sound quality will suffer a little from running at 1 ohm as the amps dont have as much control over the movement of the subwoofer.

i was just presenting the possible solutions to his needs. the really big difference is gonna be how much he can budget for an amplifier. the 1 ohm mono solution, for example, at my store would run about 450 for the directed 1500d or 520 for the diamond (much better amp). the 4 ohm solution would run about 510 for a kicker kx800.2. the directed and diamond amps would definately put out more than necessary, the kicker would be just about enough.

now i am sure there are other amps out there that would do the job, and do it adequately, but that is what i would recommend based on what i sell here at my shop.

The Phoenix Gold Octane line is their entry level line which their lowest line so they only spec max power on those amps not rms so it wont do 800rms. If you want Phoenix Gold try the Xenon line & get the Xenon 1200.1 which does 1200rms form 1ohm to 4ohms load & it is also a underated amp so you'll have alot of headroom. I have Phoenix Gold amps & they are perform & sound great.

also with a 4 channel amp, you will either only use 2 channels as you would not be able to run that amp bridging 2 of the channels at 2 ohms, or blow it from running it too low of an impedance.

I had my 2 10" type r's running off a 2 channel MTX that put out 250rms to each sub and my subs sounded great. I had them bridged just like Lurch was saying. I found my Amp overheating after about 45minutes to an hour but i had in stuffed under a seat and had no circulation at all....
