Anything is possible. Your trunk will pretty much be history to accommodate the air space required for 15" subs. The box will have to be well designed & probably built in place since the trunk opening is very small. It depends on the subs to determine what amp & how much power. What brand & model are they. Why do you want 15" so bad?

is there a reason you want specifically 2 15" subs? That would sound pretty awful imo. Friend has 2 15"s in his car and while the lows are pretty deep, it sounds pretty muddy altogether.

i saw a set of 2 on best buy for like 180 bucks and they are Power Acoustic 15" Subs that peak at 2000Watts. i want 15s cause my friends have 12s in their jeep cherokees and all, and they think my car is only for speed, and if theirs beat hard at 12" then i cant imagine how awesome it will be to have 2 15s. also i've never heard of anyone around my town with 15s in their sports car, so it will be a big advertisement for the rx8 cause everyone will hear me when im drivin (exhaust and subs) haha

Uhm, everyone will hear your trunk shaking itself off it's bolts and what not. I've got 2 10's in mine and it's MORE than loud enough. What would be better is like 2 12's or 10's and then replace the speakers on the inside as well. That will be MORE than enough. I'm not a hater in anyway because I'm more than happy with my 10's because I can still use my trunk (look into 4080 boxes on the forum). Anyway, impressing your friends isn't what it's all about. Like someone said earlier, that will be WAY muddy and you don't have the airspace you need.

size of the speaker doesn't always equal more volume, a higher quality more efficient smaller woofer will run up and down on a shitty set of 15s etc. You can get a decent set of 10s or 12s for that same price that will sound better, give you more volume, and last longer. Not to mention the extra weight your enclosure will take, the extra air space etc. the subs will require, as mentioned by other folks don't be fooled by the size, you can get amazing results with woofers as small as 6" if you do it right. (I've personally witnessed a Porshce 928 that had a wall of 6" woofers in that recess near the back hatch running off a Zapco amp and that car was loud as hell, super clean too)

I am going out on a limb here, but I am assuming you are young and have a limited budget. I say this because years ago I made similar unwise investments in car audio. I would highly recommend staying away from any sub that advertises 2000W for anything near $200.00 each, let alone for the pair. There are many great subs out there, but Power Acoustik is not one of them. Even if they were, to push them would require a $1000.00 amp for each one. As stated above, JL is a great brand for the money. I will not tell you what to do or how to do it (unless you ask), but if your friends have Power Acoustic or equivalent, you can step up and blow their doors off w/ a good set of 10s or 12s. Look at a few of the higher end brand's websites (JLaudio.com for instance) and read up on matching a good sub, with an amp in the optimum power range mounted in an enclosure w/ optimum air space. My personal opinion is that you would be better off buying used name brand equipment for the same money than cheap equipment. There are many debates about Ebay, but if you do your homework, there are deals to be had. I have yet to be ripped off. Find a reputable installer in your area and talk to them about the pros & cons of cheap equipment. If worst comes to worst......Sound Advice sells good equipment & has financing. Good Luck.

i couldnt agree with you guys more i work at a car audio store and jl is def the way to go even if you want 15". my friend has an 18 and dispite the size its great. if you really want 15s buy some good ones and they will sound great. also youll def need to invest in some dynamat. i also think two smaller subs would allow you to utilize the opening between the rear seats.

A really good enclosure for a 15" driver is enormous. Far to large to fit in your trunk. There are enclosures you COULD fit in your trunk, but I have my doubts about how accurately they can reproduce sound.

A properly tuned 10" in a sealed enclosure would blow away any 15" setup you could put in your trunk, in terms of frequency response, the "tightness" of your bass, and the costs involved in getting it installed and powered.

1-2 Kilowatt amps are frequently used to drive bass systems in packed clubs where the mass of bodies on the dance floor absorb all the bass. An 8 is much smaller then a club. You don't need that much power.

Remember. It's not about who can make fart noises the loudest (a 15" would rule for that). It's about how loud you can play your stereo without any distortion, and how completely it replicates the original music.

Good God, this thread is from 2006???

Anything is possible. But if you even have to ask us that, your skills are not up to it. Take it to a pro. It's not going to be cheap by any means, but it's possible. Complete waste of time and money.... but it's possible.

And to power them correctly, you're going to need some electrical system work. H/O alt for starters.

Cool

you no you can get 2 12's = 2600 watts rite?
great sound quality too. im refering to the 12' sony xplods 1300 watts each
unless your saying the 2 15's get 4000 together then dam...your windows might not even be able to handle that no joke iv seen a friend of mines back window shatter due to extreme bass. gota be carful past 3000 watts. and if u put 2 15's in your rx8...your goign to have to get it custom made. i dont recommend yourself doing them because boxes arent easy take my advice and experience....disasterous on my try and wasted money. will take up entire trunk too. or just do what i did f driving everyone else/out with the back seats n throw a giant subs box over them...but requires sum nice handywork. my 8 is for me and my baby girl only no3rd or 4th passengers for now haha.

sony xplods are some of the worst subwoofers you can buy as far as SQ (sound quality) go with some FI BTL subwoofers if you want some serious bass or even rockford fosgate power series. JL subwoofers are nice and all but cost a grip of cash not worth it imo FI's will hit harder and will be much more cost effective

Another thing to keep in mind is that peak power ratings are typically about double what 'real' RMS ratings are. Those cheap 15's you're looking at are really at best 1000W apiece (which still may be generous, ie running at 80Hz for 3 seconds, but at any lower frequency the sub wouldn't have enough excursion, and any longer than 3 seconds the voice coil would heat to the point of failure.)
I've got a 10" sub that I'm going to install at some point in a 4080 that has a thermal rating of 1600W RMS. Trying to save money on the driver is pretty short sighted. The 4080 boxes (and those similar) for a 10" driver are around $300. You can go cheaper for 10" drivers, maybe even for 12", but you'll lose a ton of trunk space. For a pair of 15's, box fabrication is going to probably run you near $1000 if you don't know how to do the work yourself.

Free posts?

A chance to talk crap about cheap speakers/amps?

A chance to inform people on the difference between possible, feasible, and practical?

A chance to remind people that peak ratings are the most useless measurement of speaker/amp power ratings ever yet conceived by the audio industry?

hopefully this guy really didnt get 15s, i have two 10"s and my head kills me after a nice drive, but i do like how he said that his friends in the cherokees had 15s, and that he doesnt know of any sports cars with 15s. Well unless someone is showing the car all the time, i dont think someone is gonna put up the money, time, or loss in horsepower for these.

I just recently got my 8 and within one week i had my 15 in it. 15" RE Audio SX powered by 2000w alphasonik pma-1000d. **** bumps hard and sooo clean. Box tuned at 28hz. A good 15 and a properly tunned box will blow anything out of the water. RE and Alpha make some of the best stuff on the market.
