Clutter

Still, most (maybe I'm being overly generous) know there isn't functionality to the hood scoop, but respect the guys opinion on his style. I think the scoops do look cool and offer an aerodynamic - supercar look. I won't put one on myself, but I'd like to see his car when it's done.

Make your comments useful, if he asked about the functionality of the hood scoop, then comment on the functionality of the hood scoop, otherwise you're just "dirtying" up the thread, start a new thread about the functionality of hood scoops.

The more cluttered this forum gets the less useful it is!!!

I don't know, I guess they've always had usless parts on cars for styling purposes, like the Ram Air on my Firebird, it was supposed to work but didn't. But there were some great fast cars built in the early 70's that didn't have to conform to certain government standards. If you like the way it looks, it is your car.
I'd be damned if anyone told me what to do with mine.

Speaking of styling vs. functionality, the radiator opening on our RX-8's front grill is only about 1/2 functional. The rest of the grill is closed off and the balance of cooling air is drawn from below, so our car's front grill is 1/2 styling gimmick because it needs to look like a member of the Mazda family.

On that line of reasoning, some self-styled purists on this board should rip off their front grills. Please line up.

I wouldn't add a roof scoop myself, but I'd like to see what one looks like tastefully done. Cut the guy some slack.

Nope, those are different - their only purpose is style. Cosmetics only - they're not pretending to be race car parts, and they're not functional on some cars and fake on others. A scoop has a definite function on the mid-engine cars listed - to put a mid-engine roof air intake on a front engine car isn't style, it's silly. When Subaru put a factory hood scoop on their Legacy GT sedans/wagons (96-99), it was just as silly and useless. When Ford and GM put fake scoops on their cars for decades, it was silly and useless. The other term is "poseur" - basically, having a non-functional performance mod. A scoop that doesn't scoop is posing. Whether it is some trend-following factory designer with no imagination (see Pontiacs for dozens of examples), or an individual trying to follow a trend without understanding the original purpose or function doesn't matter.

Regards,
Gordon

I thought that was pretty clear - style mods (strakes, clear corners, tint, to use your examples) vs. fake non-performance poser pseudo-performance mods (roof scoop, to use the thread topic as an example). They're clearly different.

Look at it this way - I can wear a suit or a tuxedo, or jeans and sweater, as the appropriate situation occurs. Variations in style. However, I'd look like a real *** running around in Superman tights and a cape when it's obvious that I can't fly etc. That's not style, that's posing, and it's just silly. When Superman wears the tights, then it's cool. Consider the fake scoops etc. the equivalent of running around in Superman tights and a cape. Better yet, fit the tights with a lead belt, so that the guy running around in them not only looks silly, he's actually slower than if he was wearing regular clothes. THEN you've got the equivalent of some of the poser pseudo-performance stuff that people tack onto their cars! :D

Regards,
Gordon

Gord, you'll never convince Mikeb of your point...he is blind to reason.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Strakes and light upgrades aren't pretending to be something they're not. A hood scoop (especially aftermarket) should have some real purpose other than to "look really cool". This type of mod is kind of funny to consider an appearance mod vs. a functional mod.

Every now and then someone starts using the term "ricey" to apply to car mods. Usually, they have no clue what the term was coined to mean, and they use it for anything Japanese that they don't like. If you go back and find the original "riceboy" web page...you'll see that it applies to anything, primarily involving Japanese import cars...where things are added to a car that would indicate performance, but which aren't. Mild cases were "Turbo" decals on non-turbo cars. There were even some fake plastic front-mount intercoolers! THAT is the real meaning behind the term "rice" in this scenario, and that is EXACTLY what putting a functionless roof scoop on a car is accomplishing.

Now, that said, if somebody wants to put that on their car, I completely believe they have the right to do so.

I also believe that, while pointing and laughing might make me a d*ckhead, I have every right to be one of those if I so desire :D

So you admit to trolling? Do NOT start flame wars on here. That is also the lamest excuse in the book on forums. "haha, I got you, I don't really [feel/think/own controversial topic] I just wanted to get a rise out of you." How very amusing. Don't do it again.

I drove an Integra Type-R way back when before I got a Boxster.

It was an awesome car. Salesman couldn't drive stick for **** tho. I shamed him horribly.

That bein' said, it's still not going to smoke an 8. But it is still an excellent FWD car.

At the rear, so your kills can see what beat them. LOL, you don't want them thinking it was the broad power band saving shift times, or the great suspension providing fantastic handling, do you?

If you have the sunroof, then you can add a roof scoop , put the sunroof on tilt, and it will be (somewhat) functional.. right? right?
Alot of people say the AC doesnt cool well anyway! It works too well for me though, i get cold easy.

if you placed a rear engine inside your 8 or put a turbine in the rear of the car that the airscoop brings air, it would be functional.
