Vented hoods, why I like them.
Real benifits of a vented hood.
Vented hoods are great because at low/medium speed they help get the hot air out. At high speed they also get the hot air out but they are more helpful in reducing a build up of air pressure under the hood that cars with grills experience.
On drag cars, they are low to the ground and everything is covered because they need to be aerodynamic. They do not need an opening for their radiator because they are set-up different.
But on an everyday car at high speed the air enters the engine bay and cannot exit as fast as it goes in and there is allot of turbulence. With a vented hood at 80 plus you really can see the difference. Air pressure is released and you no longer have that parachute effect in the engine bay. Your car will be faster top end.
Vented hoods are a great investment and don’t show their potential on the dyno. Same as RAM air for your intake.
I liked the R-magic hood so much I bought 2 of them. 1 nice one that I am now selling, and a dull old one that needs to be re-painted, which I will eventually paint WB to match my car. In the meantime I'm enjoying the dull hood and don’t have to worry if bird crap gets on it or if it gets scratched. Hell, even one of the corners where it bolts to the hood hinge has been chipped. This vented hood has made a noticeable difference on my car and I highly recommend a vented hood for a good investment for top end speed.
P.S.
I heard it through the grape vine that Rotary Extreme will be offering replica Ms kits again in January 09.
Also the MS carbon fiber rear spoiler should be back around March 09.

I've had a vented Seibon hood for about a year now and I've noticed the best effects at low to medium speeds. Being in Phoenix with 120 degree summers, sitting in traffic with a car that already runs hot requires some method to vent excess heat.
Sitting in traffic you can see the excess heat pouring off the motor that might otherwise be trapped inside the engine bay.

Yeah, sometimes I see a mirage of naked chicks dancing around in front of me in those heat waves coming from the vents. But then I realize I'm just day dreaming about mazdamaniac's pictures of all those hot chicks in his avatars.

vented my own hood... the oem one.
look closely at the passenger side of the hood rotor and you can somewhat see a small single vent. its very discreet... and hood is very light now.
CF hood is too catchy from my experiences and kinda ricey. imo
i hate how unmatching of not just the color, but also the fitment sometimes of CF hoods... hence the reason i decided to hack up the already light weight aluminum units we are blessed to have.
my opinion: CF trunks are an investment/bonus, CF hoods are not. if its just vents you want... get creative and cut your own design.

i never noticed any cooling gains with the KS style seibon. Also the way the hood moves around is unnerving, especially if you read about how so many CF hoods have come off the hinges and flown off the vehicle.

^Seriously? What kind of reinforcement/frame does Seibon use? I really like the way the KS style hood looks, and I was toying with the idea of picking one up and getting it painted. Under what conditions do you see a significant amount of flexing?

I thought maybe my hood was made poorly, but I've pressed down on a half dozen hoods and they all flex the same way.

My hood is carbon fiber stock on my Skyline and I've never see it flutter around like I'm seen other aftermarket hoods. At 300kmh it doesn't even move

I have the KS style and haven't had these problems at all up to 130mph...The only time I have seen my hood really have noticeable flex is going through the dryer at the end of the car wash.

you should be able to push down with one finger in the center of the hood and see it flex. I don't believe the cars in FL are the only ones that exhibit this behavior.

Mysql, I will make a youtuber for you this weekend by doing the finger in the center technique. My hood is pretty solid, the r-magic copy, but its also heavier then the stock hood. Maybe the weather or humidity and heat effects the hoods in FL.

Now on to the vented hoods themselves. Most of the ones you see are for show. The real ones are not considered "vented", they are called extractor hoods. They are meant for cars that have either a V-Mounted radiator or V-Mounted intercooler set up. The vent of the hood is set up directly on the hotside of the radiator/intercooler to pull all the heated air out. These hoods are full function and are ducted to keep them weather proof.

Man some of you RX-8 guys are cracking me up. You guys seem to have lost the meaning of the word Rice somewhere. Carbon Fiber serves a function, it's lightweight. Last I checked, functionality doesn't fall under rice. I can't possibly see how you can justify a carbon boot lid and not a bonnet? By the way, a proper carbon fiber hood is braced as factory and should not flex at speed.

Dry carbon saves a lot of weight and is very strong but almost all the CF products on the market for the RX8 are wet carbon. Wet carbon does not save very much weight and with most of the hoods it does not save any weight. I have the seibon TS vented hood. I am having it painted so it wont stand out as much but the reason I got it is to help reduce the underhood temp and pressure. Plus my insurance company was paying for the paint.

All the vented hoods I've handeld are heavier then the stock aluminum hood.
For mysql, I can press my hood down a little bit by the vents with my finger, but it requires some pressure. Now I'm thinking about adding a small reinforcement.
But I never, ever see it flex at up to 140mph. (The R-Magic replica by seibon)

I'm a vent guy too. I love the way it looks. The hood needs to be vented for sure if you go FI.
