Robert, you've got the exact same idea I've been thinking about. I'd love to see this one happen.
I've been thinking about this for a while. I'm wondering if someone couldn't turn the "rotary" "dent" on the hood upside down. In other words, have it bump out instead of in and let air flow out of the back (but that might let too much water under the hood?). Or, if it were a scoop, let air come in the front.

im feelin the mazdaspeed and the c-west they look like they would show pretty well in the show room and there not hella dramatic there more suptly

I think ultimatly a proper cooling hood could have some thought put into it and a really great product could be made. Not just something cool, but something super-functional also. Kinda like the intake on the '8, but looking at the thermodynamics of the engine bay v.s. how to change that for proper heat removal.

I've seen an MS style hood on an RX7. The profile is not too appealing (to me). It bulges up where the vent is. The scoot style I photochopped into the hood is IMHO the one that best compliments the 8. Second to it would be the Amemiya.

According to folks here it wouldn't be very functional as a vent. I still think a scoop would work, though.

OK folks, It looks like the winner is the MazdaSpeed style. Keep in mind that this will take us some time (about 2 months) to produce. The hood will have the same similar style as the RX7 hood. As for a well thought out design, that was the point of using some designs that are already proven. The MS will be fully functional and offer excellent heat evacuation from under the hood, keeping the incoming air through the front openings moving through the radiator and out the top of the hood vent in an unrestricted flow. The cost is still yet to be determined though it should be somewhare around $750 and it will be carbon fiber. Other details will be posted as the progress continues. For now the real work begins. Thanks for all the comments and ideas.

I wasn't insinuating that any of those designs wouldn't do the job. I was actually thinking that it'd be cool to have other components (underbody scoops? some way to change the air pressure inside the hood to push air out harder?) under the hood to help ventilation through the hood. In the end, I guess what I was saying is that there may be some nuances that we could finesse with the RX-8 engine bay using a completely custom hood versus modifying another design. Not that I have any personal vested interest. I'm not looking to buy a hood at the moment.
At any rate, keep us posted Huff. I'd look a little bit harder at a replacement hood if it were significantly lighter than stock (which will be a difficult task, indeed). Also, what will the effects be of water getting in the vents? Has that caused a problem in the past? Is there any way to have lips around the vents to keep water from leaking in?

Great news, Huff! May I suggest you also make it in aluminum or polymer so it can be painted to match? There are those of us who like the idea of a good hood, but don't want CF...

How is it that the MS won? I think I counted as many for the Scoot style...
Can someone post a picture of the MS one with a side profile. You may have some changed opinions.

I did like the ideas of the custom hood that were presented, but the manufacture estemated the cost of the design and in the end the cost of the hood may not be enough to warrent the design. As for water getting into the vents the only real issue is if the potencial buyer is running an after market open air filter element. Otherwise the engine will not be affected by rain water. The motor is designed to have proper sealing so that you can drive it in the rain and the like.

More than likely the hood will be offered in two designs, carbon fiber and fiberglass. That way one can paint the hood if they desire. Also, carbon can be painted though most people usually like the look. Aluminum stamping process is super expensive compared to the cost of C/F or glass.

Great news to hear we have a vented hood going into production.....I am slightly disappointed with the selection, though. I would have preferred the Scoot, as well. I may not even purchase the MS...... <shrug>
