Urgent help on HID!

Hey guys i just installed and swapped in my PIAA super cobalt 6600k HID bulbs..

beautiful color and beam, PIAA really has done a great job as advertized on the beam pattern of the bulb...very precise beam pattern i love it.


Problem here though is after 30 secs or so the HIDs will turn OFF! which then i can turn back on... and 30 secs or so it turns off again....

Possible problems?

- If the bulbs or ballast are burnt out i wouldnt be able to turn them back on (not the problem)

Does anyone have any idea what the deal is?


these bulbs are supposed to be direct replacement bulbs just like the phillips etc.. and all other HID bulbs.


Please help me out you electronic guys!

I think i've narrowed it down to voltage sags.......

I've done some researching on the net and it is said that HID systems are sensitive to voltage sags and will turn off if it could not sustain the certain amount of power.....

it has been snowing for the past week and my car has been parked in the garage for more than a week.......

Is this the problem??

How would i fix this?

FYI, all HID bulbs claimed to made by phillips other than D2S/D2R are rebased capsules. In our car we use H11 foglights, I would not buy a phillips dubbed H11 because it wasn't made for a H11 socket, it is a likely a D2S rebased with a H11 socket.

If your car didn't come with HIDs then they are not D2S. I believe they would be H7 in which case my comment would still apply, unless of course, you replaced the entire headlight.

I just replaced my stock phillips D2Ses with these PIAA ones

battey going bad???? put it on a charger or drive the car and see if they stay on. you do have fog/driving lites dont you????

with the cold weather the battery could be weak. have you had it upgraded or are you on the originial 330 cca bat. ???

Im with my OEM battery and no i dont not have my foglights anymore.

This is a relatively new car.... battery wont go bad so fast i dont think?

The stock Phillips are 35w..... These new PIAAs are also 35w...

i still cant wrap my head around why there could be a problem....

Put the stock ones back in. If the problem persists, the battery is the cause.

Everything is installed back on the car.... bumper, headlights etc...... its such a hassle to switch them out....

What if the stock bulbs work fine if i put them back in?..

then the problem is the new bulbs?


But if there is a problem with the new bulbs... wouldnt them just not turn on at all?

Yes i have the GT and it comes with the HIDs...

im just swapping out the stock Phillips to these new PIAAs

So you are confident that the problem is indeed the battery and not the new bulbs?


if the battery is failing... then wouldnt there be not enough power to start the car?


I imagine the HIDs require less voltage than cranking up the car?

It is not the battery!

There is no way your battery could cause this. It is most likely a conflict between your ballast and your new bulbs. HID bulbs ignite at 20,000 volts, once the plasma is burning they run on about 80 volts. Your PIAAs may need a higher or lower voltage to run at. In which case there is nothing you can do. Just try the stock bulbs again.

You can change the bulbs in about 10 minutes, without removing anything. Just go in from the fenderwell, I have changed my light 5 times. So, I would know.

Go in from the fenderwell?

Would i need to take the wheels off?

But i doubt its the bulbs that run at a different voltage because these are made specifically for OEM HID replacement bulbs.......

thats the case i think its the bulbs that are bad? Get warranties from PIAA?

Post Fender....

The fender approach is really easy, if you jack up the front of the car, the wheels droop enough to be out of the way, then a couple of those plastic screw-lock things, and you can see the whole back of the headlight, 5 minutes, tops.

If you start the car, and the same thing happens it is NOT the battery, the car can put about 14 volts to the ballasts, they should not cut out, take 'em back.

If they stay lit, could be you just ran the battery flat, or if it happens again, change it out.

I don't know about car bulbs....but HID bulbs for reef aquariums use different ballasts and ignitors for different color temp bulbs. This is often the problem you get with them if the ballasts are not compatable...they strike and light up for a short time and then go out.....or they don't light at all.

Usually if you make a change in something and it doesn't work...it is the thing you changed.

Even Murphy doesn't ususlly work in that mysterious way

and............................................... they work fine..........


Crap it must be the bulbs then.......... But WHY?! Theyre made to be specifically OEM HID replacement bulbs.............


why oh why they looked so nice.....while they were on.........

Where did you buy the bulbs from?

Can you return them and buy another brand?

I've installed 8500K, 7500K and now 6000K bulbs on my car. I know that for a fact some bulbs ARE better than others.

I bought them off forum member Malloy, i've been in contact with him and he stil has the origional receipt and everything he will be in touch with a PIAA rep tommorrow to check out whats wrong.......


But the PIAAs should be direct replacements... i think its just these bulbs had defects...

Didn't the seller know they didn't work in our car? -maybe thats why he sold them???

Its new and in its orgional packing and everything.


Nah, Mike (the seller) is a good guy. He is even going out of his way to help me contact a PIAA rep and try to get me some warranty replacements....

I will wait for the word tommorrow and update this thread to let everyone know how it went.

I would be suspicious of anything outside of a Phillips or Osram HID bulb. I hope you also know that 6600k is illegal and harmful to your eyes, but whatever suits your boat.

Exactly why did you buy 6600k bulbs?
