Trunk Lid

Hey everyone i was just wondering would a trunk lid off an 04 rx8 fit onto an 07? I want to get rid of my wing but it would cost more to get holes filled and stuff so im just going to buy a new trunk. I got a good deal on an 04 trunk for $165 shipped. Thanks for any answers.

yes trunks from 04-08 are interchangeable.. i think the 09-11 are interchangeable with the S1 as well, but dont quote me on that one.

I could be wrong, but i think it could swap. An oem spoiler from an S2 could fit on an S1 or vice versa. Never heard someone tried it, but it is a possibility.

^cornholio lol...

i think it looks better on a S1 than it does on the R3 lol.

Spoiler swaps between S1 and S2 is possible, and i have a feeling trunks from a S1 can fit on a S2 because i remember seeing a S2 with a CF trunk and CF mazdaspeed wing, and i dont remember anyone making a CF trunk specifically for a S2...

but to answer the OPs question, yes it will fit.

Hello All;

I got rear ended couple on my 2007 RX-8 couple of mouths ago. The mechanic did a good job fixing the car and painting. Mechanic replace the trunk and put a new trunk weatherstrip. However, the trunk lid doesn’t close smoothly. I have to slam the trunk lid to close/latch it. I was told by the mechanic that this due to the new weatherstrip, which is very hard. Indeed, I see that new weatherstrip is much harder that the old one. This is an OEM weatherstrip, so I know that he used original parts. I went back several times to the mechanic for adjustments, he tried multiple alternatives, but still not as smooth as it used to be. He told that the weatherstrip rubber will eventually soften.

Has anybody seen this problem before? Is there ay way to soften the weatherstrip, or a soften replacement for RX-8? Moreover, can anybody explain how to adjust the trunk lid hinges myself. I would want to do the adjustment myself rather than asking the mechanic to do it.

I went to check mine and you can't make it much softer. There is a metal lip inside. I'm thinking the mechanic misaligned the lid somehow. Does it sit flush when closed?

Thanks Loki. YES, trunk lid sits flush when close it. Can you please explain where is that metal lip that needs alignment? The mechanic put a new trunk with a new weatherstrip. Did you fix the issue already in your RX-8?

The weatherstrip goes over the pinch weld. Did your “mechanic “ look to see if there was any damage to the rear panel? If it’s bent that will cause it not to close. Did he check the lower latch. That has an adjustment too. If he did a good job you shouldn’t have these problems. It’s part of the fit and finish of the job.

Oh man. Looks like a have to visit the mechanic again for further adjustments.Do you think that his explanation of "new wethaerstrip is too hard, and it will soften in time" was just BS?

Do you think Mazda told every new 8 buyer that when they bought their cars.

If you have to slam anything closed then there is something wrong. A new gasket won’t cause it unless the pinch weld or something around it is out of alignment. Yes take it back and tell them to do better.

Thanks dxjp, i will. BTW; can you please explain how to adjust the trunk lid hinges myself. I saw him adjusting it up and down trying to make it close smoother. But i didn't pay attention how to do it. I would want to try it before taking it to the mechanic, just to have a good understanding of the mechanism.
