Will the 2009 tail lights fit on previous models like my 2004?

 

they CAN be made to fit but they don't look good as the the gaps will be quite off.
Someone here did it on a red RX-8

I just noticed something on the 09's guys....the tail lights are not flush on it either....seems to be the design of the light...altho it does look better around the bumper on the 09...but still, it's not as bad as I thought

 

i see all kind of LED tails, but no actual reviews on quality if you get some could you let me know the fit n finish?

 

That's exactly right. The new tails are not flush with the trunk, but they do sit flush with the bumper, which is where it really looks odd on the retrofitted pic above. I still think a taillight + bumper swap would look best, but I think the new exhaust tips sit a bit lower so you would have to deal with that too.
