To Strake or Not To Strake?

My strakes are fine, but the rubber gasket under them is droping and looks sloppy. Then there is the issue with the black plastic fender grills themselves - man are they looking bad. So, my poll is to strake or not to strake. I'm contemplating taking the strakes off and going with a different fender grill vent. I might even have the stock vents aluminum coated like I did the ECU and Fuse box covers.

Whats your preference?

I personally like the strakes.
It was pointed out to me to look at the sides of my headlights and taillights and to follow the two parts that hook out (I guess you could say) and that the strakes finish that line.

I liked the for about a year, but I have since grown out of them. I will probably take mine off if I can. So I gotta say get a new plastic grill.

What are the options for replacing the plastic grill? I decided awhile ago that I don't want the strakes, but if I could replace the plastic grills with something that didn't suck I'd definitely do that.

It's either OEM ones fixed up or maybe the Autobahn ones. The CF I have looked at don't do anything for me yet. Anybody have any others to add?

i ordered the stainless steel strakes, but i don know i will install them as my white RX8 probably wont look good in it. Maybe if I change my color next year to Titanium Grey or something......looks great in other colors. so keep it man.

Why do the grilles look bad?

If it is because they have wax residue try some Mother's Back to Black.

I love the stainless strakes on my silver.

In the beginning I didn't think I liked the look of strakes either, especially chrome strakes on a VR '8. They look great on a black or gray/silver '8, but not on the VR (IMHO)

Anyway, I got the VR strakes for Xmas, and although I was't sure if I liked them at first, they have grown on me, and now I really think they add a "touch of class", especially when the early morning sun is facing the '8 head on and the strakes are lit up along the side of the car. (I'll have to see if I can get a pic someday).

Anyway, I have come to reallly like them!!!

strakes look fine if your planning to stay stock. but a change in fender grills is even better.

I changed my vents out. I think the new ones look good.

I agree that "to strake or not" has a lot to do with color. I think it's because the 8 has many unusual shapes and lines that draw your attention to the car, so on most RX-8 colors the strakes can almost be "too much," making an arguably "busy" looking car even busier. The black 8's are different—if many of those cool curves, lines and angles don't quite disappear, they at least become very subtle. On these dark colors, silver strakes might lend a bit of visual interest on what otherwise borders on being just an RX-8-shaped black car (which is quite attractive, but in a very different way than the lighter colors, IMHO). I just ordered the stainless steel strakes for my Black Cherry; I'm curious to see how they look.
