I know there are older threads on this, but I wanted to share my experience and opinion.
Today, I picked up my tail-lights from "Bumper Doc" in San Diego.
I had them paint my lights solid red for me.
I do have the vinyls, but I honestly just felt more comfortable painting them...and so did pretty much anyone I asked to do it. The odd shape of the RX-8 tail lights makes most people shy away from applying a simple vinyl.
They tested out several shades/intensity/opacity of the red on a test set of lights, and I was able to pick out the shade of red and level of intensity/opacity that I wanted, which made me feel MUCH more comfortable than basically being stuck with whatever the vinyl was going to look like.
Here's 2 quick pics I took today before towing my 8 up to Mazdatrix to have them fix/build her up for me. ;]

In the end, I'm 110% satisfied. It's dark in my parking garage and the pic is from an iPhone 4S....but you get the idea.
Overall, it cost me $100 out the door. The guys at Bumper Doc are great. They did the prep, paint, and install on my Mazdaspeed front-bumper, as well as body repairs from vandalism on my Sonata. They do great work. Would highly recommend.
The vinyls were $35 IIRC, if anyone wants to buy them off me.
Anyone else been brave enough to "red-out" their tails, recently? :P
P.S. The "1337 FD" license plate is off my RX-7, obviously. My custom plate for the RX-8 hasn't showed up in the mail yet. lol

shouldve cut out a square for the reverse to show through.. inspection is going to be a problem. Ive had mine red for a few years and would never pass without some kind of reverse solution
They look ok, but honestly, one of the things I really like about the RX-8 tail lights are the details inside the lens. I know I've heard car mags rag on so many different design elements in the 8, but that's one of the things that makes it so unique and I think in general everything works really well. Regardless, if you're happy with the result that is all that matters. Looks like the shop did a good job though. Enjoy!

Snapped this pic with my iPhone a few days ago..
Wanted to see if maybe a nice day/afternoon shot of the tails might change your opinions on how the red tails look.
Looking back at my first picture posts, I can see why some think it is too drastic and doesn't look good.
But after I took this picture..

I was reminded of why I love the red tails so much.
Here's another few I took a few weeks ago:

To each his own, right? ;D
