Recessed trunk handle

Why is there a recessed handle inside the trunk lip? Do other cars have this?

If you grip and pull it down with enough force and get your hand outta the way, it will latch and close w/o having to put your hands on the exterior.

I only use the inside handle. I then grab my MS spoiler once the lid closes so that it doesn't vibrate.

yup, just found this after having my 8 for almost 2 years now....only found it because we had the rear of another 8 jacked up while switching out springs. Amazing little thing isn't it...my finger prints are gone now.

Exactly what I do for my "always IS zaino'd" car. Just goes to show some of the detailed planning used in the 8.

Same here. I don't like fingerprinting my Ice finish. Thanks RX-8 Club.

i think it's for when i put all my girl-friends in the trunk and can't close it myself because i have one hand on my flashlight and the other on my shovel... so i say, "close it, ho" and immediately they can reach up and close the trunk on themselves... makes life much easier, thanks mazda!

and you might be asking.... yes, i removed the emergency trunk release button from inside the trunk... didn't want them escaping!

P.S. - and for all the people who complain about not enough trunk space... i disagree, i find that i can fit two and one half bodies in there without too much effort...

I found mine when I was pulling the inside cover off of the trunk lid to lay some dampening material.

Was surprised to see the handle. I had to do a double take since I didn't believe I missed this after having the car for two years!

I don't recommend anyone close the trunk by their spoiler. Painted plastic tends to be sensitive to human oil and such. I found that after years of closing my Integra GSR hatch by the spoiler with my hand the wear there was much greater than the rest of the spoiler, which was fading all over.
