I think the fog lamp is a great idea. We must have at least two or three 40-car pile-ups a year just in North Atlanta because of fog related accidents. The drivers in behind just don't see the cars in front of them.
I wonder if there is a rear-fog button "placeholder" (one of those blanks) somewhere on the dash. Then again I imagine it just turns on if you have your forward fog lamps activated.

are these rear fog lights on all the time with the front lights? i've personally never seen a car with rear fog lights...when i first saw them on the RX, i just thought they were brake lights or reflectors...

No, the fog light is (as it sounds) only for use in fog. It's a very high power light that can be seen through fog for some distance to stop other cars whacking into the back of you. People in England get very upset if you leave them on by mistake in clear weather because they're blinding! Likewise we can fit front fog lamps that cut through the weather.

But good abt the rear fog light on the RX8 is it sits low and won't be that disturbing (compare to Volvo's, Benz's, and other Euro cars, which sits at the same level as the brake lights). I am thinking about getting it either from Japan or aftermarket (if it is going to be available), but is US spec cars wired for that or I have to wire it myself?
Right now I just not sure whether to get the rotary accent or the fog light, both looks great.

Post resurfaced for RotorGeek.
I don't think it would do any good, but I would sign a petition. I planned on purchasing the rear fog light later on regardless.

Hey Guys I was checking out the mini forum ( NO I AM NOT PLANNNG TO BUY ONE) They all signed an e-petition and got MINI to install the rear fog lamps in the future. Maybe we could get something started for our non-functional rear lamps. Heres the link.

It's nice to know that it's available for purchase from Japan. I assume you know a good importer where we can purchase the part, if we want it.

hehe I would think its the same. To be honest I have never seen one that wasnt inside and RX8, I could always jump on the ground and take a pic or ask them to lift it in the air so I can take a pic hehe or the wires..
The only thing is where to wire it to? As would you just wire it to one of the tail lights?

Fog light
I've owned 2 BMW's and six different Benzes and all had the rear fog light. Admittedly, I had little need to use, but when I did, in mountain fog, I was glad I had it. BTW, it has an on/off switch independent of the front fog lights. Also, I now understand the light will be available as an option for the US Mini.

I had one on my old S60. It's also handy for tailgaiters. Someone comes up too close, you can switch on the rear fog light. For a second they think it's a brake light and back off.

That HOLE in the back is beginning to bother me.
some possible solutions?
1. rearward subwoofer port
2. sport hitch pass-thru
3. batmobile fire port accessory

Rear Foglight
A couple of months ago when the 8 had it's own website I noticed in the gallery section the Euro models had a rotor shaped rear fog light in the lower valence (we get a black recess). I sent Mazda an email about this when I first saw it but got no reply. We should all seek a retrofit like the Mini owners (BMW is retrofitting all Minis with rear fog lights according to Autoweek). Other posts suggest we should seek an HP and MPG fix which will be more difficult. I am very pleased with the power. Assuming the tank was full when I got it, I got 16mpg mostly city with AC on full time, shifting at 3K never above 5K in the first 200 miles using 12.5 gal.

you'd want one so that vehicles approaching from the rear will be more able to see you in a heavy fog. They must have more fog in England because I think it's standard there and maybe with the Aussie version.
I was behind a car last week that had one and had it on. It was so bright it was almost obnoxious with very thin fog.
We get a lot in the 'mountains' here so I'd like to have one. It fits in the rotor shaped indentation on the lower rear fascia.

There is no fog light on the Australian version. We don't get the low temperatures in most areas that Europe and UK get, hence there's not much call for one... however they still look cool.

I'd be interested in either getting the rear fog light or brighter "backup lights". After getting the legal limit of tinting, it can sometimes be too dark for backing up at night.

Has anyone tried installing a rear fog light yet? There's not much info available on this subject so if someone knows something about the installation, please enlighten the rest of us.
