group buy interest for fiberglass/cf trunk
I agree that the underside of the trunk looks sick! Gap on the driver's side looks a little big but could be the angle. Quality looks very nice.
Any chance that we can get photos from further back to get a overall visual of the car? Side and center rear as examples.
Thank you in advance.

maybe its me...or perhaps the pictures, but the gaps around the trunk look awfully conspicuous. in fact in the 8th picture you could see all the way through the car by looking through the gap. was the tunk slightly open??
im a huge fan of the design and ive been waiting eagerly along with everybody else to get my hands on one of these, and its very disconcernting to see such faults in the craftsmanship

LOL ...well, I posted more pics but it was starting to get dark when I got home. I'll take more close-up shots tomorrow and multiple angles of the entire trunk.
as far as the fitment, the corners are not perfectly flushed but barely noticeable. It's probably raised by less than a cm on the corners but the sides are almost perfectly lined-up all around. And there's also a couple of tiny bubbles on one small section of the underside that you can hardly see but other than that, the weave is almost immaculate, the finish is outstanding and it lined up evenly on the first attempt of installation. I could probably try to tighten the nuts on the trunk but I don't want to crack the material. Plus like I've mentioned, you can't even tell unless you would thoroughly inspect it. I've heard a few concerns about the gap on the side... other than it's probably less than a centimeter wider the stock gap, it's evenly spaced and I don't see anything wrong with it.
I used to have a cf trunk on my 8 prior to this one and the fitment on the previous trunk was horrible, the edges were sticking out, and it won't line-up even after numerous adjustments. I won't even get into detail about the construction, material quality and finish. And that was just for an OEM cf version, fiberglass construction hand laid with cf just on the exterior. If I were to get a cf wing or spoiler added, I'd have to drill or use tape on the cf trunk and pay for pretty much the same amount it would have cost to get the mastergrade double sided cf trunk.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with the quality. Compared to the other 2 trunks I've seen from different manufacturers (my old trunk and one that I've seen on dispaly at a a car show), Mastergrade's fitment and quality is obviously superior. Plus it's guaranteed not to turn yellow after time.

btw, for those in the bay area and wanted to see the trunk in person, I'll be at the Bay Area RX8 meet this Friday. It'll be at the D&B in Milpitas (Check the bay area chat thread for details under the west regional forums). Or if your not too far from the East Bay, feel free to stop by my house and have a beer. PM me for Directions
the cf is laid after coming out of the mold, it could be possible that it is slightly thicker than single side and thats why it wont sit flush?(have to confirm this with mastergrade tomorrow) my trunk doesnt have a lift after i got the third brake light wiring out of the way. but after my car is out of the shop ill try to go to a few meets so more people can see it in person.
any chance on seeing this in person if one is in socal? or would it be at all possible to get a youtube vid? maybe when you guys get the actual groupbuy set up?

my car should be out of the shop tomorrow, depending on if i can find any faults with the new paint job. once its out, ill attend a few local meets around here so people can see this trunk in person. i dont have a camcorder so its gonna have to be off someone's cellphone vid, is that alright? (this is one reason why i dont like iphone, all those fancy features and no camcorder ability)
once people see it and more people can vouch for the fitment i will start the group buy, this trunk is by no means "flawless" (still has a slight gap like D_J has described but its better than anything out there. mastergrade is making a new trunk to test fit on my car to ensure there is no lift)
Mastergrade's quality is unbelieveable guys. Being one of the very very few distributors for mastergrade, we have heard nothing but great reviews from the guys at my350z and s2ki. Not only do the parts have good fitment, but the weight reduction is amazing. The nissan 350z hatch weight in at 14lbs. That's 10lbs lighter then the Seibon 350z hatches we carry !
Some of the pictures of the RX8 trunk really don't show the great quality weave and finish on the product. Here's our latest endevour with the guys at mastergrade (350z top secret replica rear diffuser)

Look for the launch of the new mastergrademotorsport.com website next week. They will be updating it about once a month with new products !!!

BRGREEN, cell phone vid is totally fine, o and by the way, theres a hack for the iphone that allows you to take videos. theyre not the greatest, 15fps i believe, but better than nothing. i dont remember the site but if you do a little searching you should be able to find it if you're interested.
there is?!?! my iphone is already hacked through modmyifone.com with installer on it....... but anyways i am hoping my car will be done either today or tomorrow so i can get more shots in of the new trunk.
