Debadging?

I'm just curious what the idea is behind Debadging one's car?

I think it just looks like the car had it's decals stolen. Can anyone who's done this to their car give me their reasons/inspirations to do this..

I guess this should be in General Automotive, but I'd really like to hear back from RX-8 owners cause we have the same car..

Thx

D

not an RX-8 owner and wouldn't do it to my car, but some people, especially after making a lot of body modifications, like the symetry it gives. others that have like a neon, or a tauras or a cavalier, etc... don't want a shitty name on their car with a lot of money put into it i guess.

I dont believe in debadging but as far as the Mazda and Zoom-Zoom stickers that came on mine, they had to go, that was my first mod.

With as much money as I've spent modifiying my car, it's not Mazda's anymore, it's MINE. So I don't feel the need to advertise for Mazda anymore. :D Plus, there's nothing else on the car that's all shiny silver like the badges, except maybe the exhaust, but it's got the nice gold hue going to it now, so even it doesn't count. I just think it looks cleaner. I've only debadged the rear so far, but I'll do the "Zoom-Zoom" on the front bumper if my Burnout lip ever gets here so I can get it installed.

Debadging is very popular among the Euro tuner crowd, particularly BMWs.

In Europe, in most countries you actually have to pay extra to have a badge so most people don't.

Also car makers like BMW often have several models that have similar engines, like 325, 330 etc.. Some debadge so people will think they have a better car, some debadge their car to make it a sleeper (if they have the bigger engine). Most debadge because it looks cleaner and is easier to wax.

I've debadged every car I've owned except the 8 (so far) since IMO it looks cleaner and less cluttered.

BTW, it also prevents someone else 'debadging' them for you.

Do you guys know how much it should cost to ...

1. Take the "MAZDA" sign and the big "M" hamburger off the back. I'm not sure, but I think they are attached to my car with posts - (born 9/03).

2. Remove the "RX-8" and front hamburger, have them pearled and put back on. I think I've seen some pearled badges on this site (not the black ones like cgrx has - I have a ti gray). I think it was some sort of smoked pearl color or something.

Any insight would be appreciated.

1) About $500 ..I've heard

2)I'd say about $100 -$150....

What I did - about $28 ( I ordered new badges so I would have to mess with re-applying 3M tape)

I completely agree with scud. The car ain't Mazda's anymore....its mine. Hell, I don't even want the damn door handles anymore. It makes the car so unbelievably clean. And even beyond that, it adds a mystic as to what kind of car is that. People can't identify it, and they know its unique!

You buy what is called a "shaved door handle kit." It is basically a solenoid you wire into your exisiting keyless entry system (or a new one) that actuates the door opening mechanism when you press the unlock button, plus a spring loaded popper that then pushes the door open for you a little bit. It's on my list of things to do. :D

It shouldn,t there just on by double sided tape basically 3M. At least that how most are and id figure these are to. So all you have to do is heat them up and take them off. Then remove the adhesive left over off the paint. Thats how i did it to my car. And it was free.

Sorry....you haven't done a search! There are posts in all but the "RX-8" emblem. If you don't believe me, look through my site, and you'll see pictures of the work it took to debadge the car. It's not just double sided tape. That's why it ain't cheap! So ulness you want to leave the holes after heating them off, you're gonna have to have a body shop remove them.
