Brake Caliper Paint

I'm gonna paint my stock calipers. Yeah, yeah, they're stock and all, but they look 10x better if they're painted than if they're rusty and crappy looking. I was thinking of going the big brake kit route. But since the stock brakes are quite good and big enough already (12.7" vs. 13" Baer kit I used to have on my Eclipse GS-T), I'm gonna use that money towards something else.

My car is a titanium gray GT, with the black and red leather interior. I'm thinking of painting the calipers red. But then my younger sister said that red is played out and she suggested yellow instead. I kind of agree with what she said and think that yellow isn't that bad at all. But then yellow doesn't really go with the black and red interior. Should I go ahead and paint the calipers yellow anyway, just to be different?

Or maybe silver? How about black? What do you guys think? I know it's my car and I can do whatever I want with it, but I'd certainly appreciate some feedback.

I'm gonna use G2 paint, by the way.

Thanks.

I've got a Sunlight Silver and plan to powder coat the calipers silver. It stands out but is not flashy like red/yellow.

Any color you do will be better looking than stock.

Jedi54 08-10-2007 03:13 PM

It all depends on the color of your car. For a Ti, I recommend black.

WoodsOfGreenRx8 08-10-2007 03:14 PM

Silver would look good.

I was thinking about power coating mine black but probably going to get BBK & new lighter calipers & such in the back..

NgoRX8 08-10-2007 03:16 PM

black works for every car color

GRGJTSN 08-10-2007 03:59 PM

I agree that red isn't very unique, but I think that's because it is one of the best colors for the calipers.

Silver would look good. Black would look OK I think, but almost not worth the effort. Yellow can look good on some cars, but is definitely the wrong color for your car.

My Opinion: Paint 'em red. Second choice would be silver.

Good Luck!

magikone69 08-10-2007 07:31 PM

i couldnt choose so i piced black and red, the mounting brackets are red and the caliper part is black..i personally like it and others who have seen it like it as well...i wanted somethin not over done, i personally dont like all red calipers so i went a il different route.

HolyCross05 08-10-2007 07:37 PM

I voted for red but whatever color you choose don't forget to add Polak's RX-8 decal.

Razz1 08-11-2007 12:57 AM

Why not go hot purple?

chickenwafer 08-11-2007 12:59 AM

I painted my gold. The dark rusty spots were getting to me. I also added PoLak's red RX-8 graphics to each calipers. And I didn't paint the bracket, either.

NgoRX8 08-11-2007 01:27 AM

i use to have red w/ the decal...i was such a noob back then. lol

chickenwafer 08-11-2007 01:30 AM

I agree red is a little ricey but gold isn't bad

midlifer 08-11-2007 07:42 AM

Did you paint your shields? They look a lot better than mine. Looks nice.

Black. Paint your rotor hubs as well...

when i swapped rotors i cleaned the shields very very well with a scrubbing pad and brake cleaner...they were really dirty and i figured i might as well do it with the wheels off, cant te when is the next time ill have a shot...so far they are still clean.

the polak graphx stick on even with the heat, i might look into some if they do

MazdaJeff 08-11-2007 09:33 PM

Black all the way!

r0tor 08-12-2007 05:34 PM

i v0te red... did it to mine and it matches the red leather nicely

baseballgenius80 08-14-2007 02:33 PM

I painted my calipers lightning yellow to match the car....looks awesome. I also had the rust issue on my hubs so I had them painted black. The hubs look MUCH better. No more ugly rust to look at.

Umbra 08-14-2007 04:56 PM

Black with white polak graphics looks really classy on my Shinka. It doesn't jump out and say "RICE", but if someone is into cars they notice the extra detail. Of course it helps to have aftermarket wheels with a very open pattern to them.

bassy 08-15-2007 09:58 PM

Wow...Red and black are neck and neck in this poll. I think I'm leaning towards red. :) Though I may change my mind at the last minute and go with any of the colors in this poll.

I was actually thinking of what magikone69 did...Not bad looking at all! ;)

ive recieved some compliments so far, its a nice lil effect, kinda gives the illusion the brake setup is larger..only thing i can say with red tho is if u want it lookin nice u might want to wipe them with a rag every week or so to keep the red looking bright cause when the dust hits it it looks very dingy/dusty looking. im sort of anal when it comes to lil details like that

mysql101 08-15-2007 11:03 PM

nice thing about red is that all our cars have it (tail lights), so it's never out of place and matches.

Astral 08-15-2007 11:52 PM

I've seen black calipers and they just don't stand out. They become lost.

firebirdude 08-16-2007 08:55 AM

Yellow does not match. Worst choice of them all.

If you want them to stand out a little..... red.... if you're just tired of the rusty looking brakes.....black. I too like the two color approach previously posted, but if the red needs to be wiped down to keep from looking like butt, I vote all black.

987HYS 08-16-2007 10:33 AM

Black all the way, red calipers are so over played.

Black will not scream out at you like red will, but it looks great when someone is really looking at the detail of your car. I painted my calipers black on my Brilliant Black 8, as well as the inside of the rotor. it looks like the rotor is floating, and really gives it a nice suttle clean look to it.

Good luck with the decision

pdxhak 08-16-2007 11:08 AM

Black Black Black

For our OEM calipers, black is so much cleaner than red.

RA-Eight 08-16-2007 10:59 PM

Red only if you have a BBK that came that way. For stock...go black or a cast silver color to restore it back to factory minus the rust.

Here are some pics of my 05 Brilliant Black. Hope it helps

heyarnold69 08-18-2007 09:21 AM

i vote pink .. umm yeah ... no not really lol stencil on Rx-8 with red paint. done and done

BlueEyes 08-18-2007 10:12 AM

After seeing many 8's with painted calipers, I have come to the conclusion that the 8 has ugly stock calipers and if you paint them it should be a colour that doesn't stand out.

Tamas 08-18-2007 11:01 AM

...so I voted for black.

llzjayarzll 09-03-2007 04:34 PM

how about copper? lol jk. i'd preferably go gloss black on yours.

bassy 09-04-2007 12:57 AM

According to this poll, red was the winner. Since I was kind of leaning towars red as well, I bought a red caliper paint kit. I saw the DupliColor kit at Pep Boys so I decided to give it a try; I was going to go with G2 initially. The DupliColor kit is less expensive than a similar G2 kit. I hope the quality is gonna be similar as well.

Anyway, I'm gonna try to find some time to paint the calipers soon. The kit's been sitting in my room for the past two weeks...Pics will follow once I'm done.

DiSfUnCtIoN 09-04-2007 08:32 PM

i would do red red looks good on almost everything

Fortunate Few 09-06-2007 05:25 PM

yellow would have looked fine if you had all black interior or even the black and gray. but since you have red interior get red!

Black is absolutely worth the effort. The dirty gray-ish rusty color of the OEM is farkin awful. Black to look clean but subtle, red to stand out - like everyone else. :rollingla

So you've already picked red. Cool. Honestly ANY color will look cleaner than stock gray.

NOW - Go back to the store, get black (or silver/gray) paint and DO THE ROTOR HUBS when you do the calipers. They may not be rusty now, but inside a year or 2 (depending on your location - I didn't think to check) you will wish you painted the hubs.

trust me, cuz right now I'm drooling jealously over 987hys' hubs.

firebirdude 10-15-2007 02:58 PM

And FYI those looking for caliper stickers....

I have black with MAZDASPEED polak decals... great looking if you ask me and I have ss

Revvittupp 10-17-2007 04:35 PM

I have a TiG. I'm thinking of picking up the G2 Safety Orange brush on kit? Touring Interior could be replaced with Black/Orange Katskinz... Thoughts?

carkid 03-23-2008 10:17 PM

No one has said blue... i think blue would be a good color

I did mine in blue 2 weeks ago.

Minotavr 04-30-2008 05:40 AM

Green ?

No one said anything about green. It matches allright with black, and it's complementary to red.

Damn that is some shiny bling action! Looks good.

midlifer 05-09-2008 03:06 PM

Thanks. They usually don't look that shiny. They have red in the spokes that you really can't see in the photos. Here is an old one (before I got the new rotors) that shows the red.
