But of course, you'll need a laptop for this.

some usb to serial adapters will work, some will not. I wasted $30 getting a radio shack one. It registers as a usb adapter, but it never connects. I borrowed a fancy one from a friend and it worked immediately.

do you think they might be "one-way" adapters? That could be entirely wrong, but maybe some adapters are for usb devices to be plugged into a serial port and vice-versa?

I seem to remember someone offering a free program they had written (I think) long ago for your laptop to view what the PCM was seeing. And everyone was saying "Thank you" in the thread, but I can't seem to find the darn thing now when I actually need it... Anyone remember that?

i need something that actually does stuff with DTCs though, and it should log too if I'm going to buy something. I'm going to get a scanalyser.
anyone have a link to a known working serial to usb adapter?
I found a laptop with a serial port on it, it was made in 1993 though... NEC UltraLite 3" thick, black and white monitor, good 5-6lbs. haha
