Data logging open source app?

BLUF: I've been searching around for the past few days looking for a data logging app but not finding anything of substance. Am I using the correct search terms?

Narrative: I'm new to the RX8 world. Bet that's the first time anyone on here has EVER started a post with those words. Kidding. Anyways, over in Legacy GT-land, we have a host of Open Source options (ROMRaider, ECUFlash, Learning View, FreeSSM etc) for mucking about within our ECU's. I'm just not finding that over here.

Having "invested" (read: pissed away) countless thousands of dollars on Cobb Access Ports for my 3 Legacy GT's before I discovered the Open Source Tuning community, I'm trying to hold off on doing that on my RX8 so please, don't suggest I buy another COBB product.

What I'd like to do:

Log / realtime monitor a specific subset of sensory output (more than a generic OBDII output can tell me)
Read, decode and ultimately clear any PCM/TCU/SRS lights that might appear

Specifically, I'm looking for a logger to count misfires AND knocks and allow me to plot them along a Throttle Position / RPM / Engine load line graph after the fact; show me engine load in real time; observe AFR's inasmuch as a narrow-band can detect, and a few other minor readings.

I find those outputs to be more helpful than just a scan tool or generic OBDII output display that can tell me what I already know (ECT, RPM, IAT, Throttle Position, etc).

So, does such a utility exist outside of COBB's products? If so, what kind of search terms should I be using on here for the next go around?

Thanks

Ryan

I am using a bluetooth elm327 OBDII canbus adapter tethered to my smartphone with the Torque app. It does a pretty good job. You may also want to look for the GOODBOX or RXDuino depending on which series of RX-8 you have.

I don't know if any of these will count misfires and knocks at particular operating conditions. I do know they will show ECU codes corresponding to these items, and the Torque app and RXDuino can clear ECU codes.

The COBB Accessport can be purchased through MazdaManiac:
MazdaManiac HOME

They sell very quickly in the For Sale section of this forum. Racing Beat will do some ECU reflashes, but I don't know of any meaningful "open" ECU tuning options for the RX-8. I think the hardware for the programmer for the ECU is actually fairly expensive, and I don't think anyone has independently "cracked" the ECU.

There are several ways to datalog (smart phone Apps with bluetooth or wifi dongles, efi dudelogger, PLX (wifi or hard wired), Hymee Scanalyzer). However the hardware used varies in terms of what data points it can see and log. The primary O2 sesnsor on the Rx-8 is a wideband so for NA tuning it is more than sufficient (reads down to 11.1 or so).

Tuning options are limited. You will just have to do your homework and figure out what is best (Cobb AP) if you plan on doing it yourself. But if you are looking for a free way to tune your options are limited and not ideal.

Thanks, appreciate the response.

I already have a laptop and OBD cable I use for tuning my Subaru's and was hoping I could get away with downloading something open source (like Learning View for the Subaru) to log vitals as I troubleshoot this rolling nightmare in Whitewater Pearl. I will look into the Torque app, thank you for that info.

Off topic:
I have an S1 base auto... pretty much the cheapest 8 you could buy in 2005. My goal is to turn it into a DD for light California work (about 1000 miles / month) whenever I'm out there for business.

I spend approx $1500 a month on rental cars and figure this thing will pay itself off eventually (if I can get it reliably running). Problem is, I need to first A. get it running well enough to drive it out to CA from Arkansas, and B. once it's there I'll need to pass smog (initially I wanted to give this to the wife as her DD and take her Legacy GT out to CA but she *hates* it and we've only had it 2 weeks... oops).

About the only thing this car has going for it is good compression right now so it will start and run but it runs like hell and I get DTC's about twice a day for different conditions (misfires, O2 sensors, MAF, etc). Before I start throwing (more) parts at it, I want to read the engine's vitals as reported to / by the PCM as cheaply as possible in real time, and be able to log and post process after the fact to help troubleshoot.

I'll give that torque app a shot, then look for a bluetooth CAN/OBD (kind of like the Tactrix Open Port?) in my price range.

Thanks again.

I'm not familiar with those you mentioned, I'm not sure if subies run the same Can bus system as the RX-8. Either way a bluetooth dongle and the Torque app are cheap. There are alos other apps that do essentially the same thing.

If your looking to resolve issues with your 7 year old RX-8 then I suggest you read the new owners thread in my signature. But without knowing what parts you have thrown at the car this thus far and the history, mileage, and issues with the car it's difficult to help.

Negative, not looking to tune. Just log, graph and troubleshoot. I'll keep searching with the terms you supplied.

Thanks

anything that can access and read the CAN bus will do

getting ready to install an AiM Pista dash display soon, it will be my logger of choice once installed, can't wait to overlay it directly onto video etc.

That thing is gorgeous. Sure as hell beats the pop riveted sheet aluminum and Autometer cluster f**k I have in my race car.
