幹他媽!
the S-Plan price for the NAVI is only $1,700. bargain hagglers prolly can do even better than that...

Wonder if we could just buy the housing with LCD screen, and get everything else installed in another fashion.

actual install of dvd nav
Amazing DIY- I want to go through with it, but how did the wiring work? I have a base model and have the dire fear of buying the equipment & getting everything taken apart with no idea where to plug up the system in what I assume will be a wiring nightmare. How and where does the system hook up? Is the car harness compatible enough to let this happen just by plugging the nav harness into it?

thank you , you will have to buy the Compleat interior wiring to make it work and you will have to repleace your old interior Wiring with the new one that has the navi Plugs and all.
When i did this the 1st time it was hard but now i think about it its not so hard its just gona take a long time to Compleat the task.
if you still need help let me know.

Wiring Loom Question
Excellent Work! I am about to do the same job in my rx8. I got a salvaged 2006 sat nav system complete with wiring loom. But Im thinking of splitting the new loom and adding the new parts from it to my existing loom.
Basically the amplifier connector needs to be changed to allow the output to the sat nav unit. And cable from there run to the lcd unit in the font dashboard. There is a link to the speedo for the gps.
Is my thinking flawed on this?
Kind Regards

OK Now the Manuel did not say how to take the steering wheel their are ( 4 ) bolts HOLDING the steering wheel. you only NEED to take them 4 bolts of to get the whole thing Out of the way when you take off the Dash Bored.
Mark How the steering shaft/wheel alignment was before taking it out because you can Adjust it by moving it Up and DOWN that is the shaft is what am referring to.
be very careful when taking the bolts of it is heavy and u dont want to hurt your self.

Definately will need new bits under dash, but which and at what cost is the problem?

Hi Bungobuns
I have just ripped most of the wiring loom for the job from the doner car, which still has to work without lights, aircon and radio eg race car!
The wiring to the rear needs to connect to the Reversing and brake lights, the GPS antenna and the Audio Amp. There is a wire to the dash lights from the Sat Nav switch unit too.
I am now starting on the forward section... but this comes through the main connector to front to back.
... back later... I didn't manage to get the loom but will connect the wires that were cut though... hoping not have to take the guts of the car out!

Hi!
Great DIY!!
I want to do the same.
I bought the DVD player + the DVD CD, the motorized 7” screen, center consol with the navigation controller, GPS antana and at least the OEM navigation system harnesses (as seen on picture in the link). BUT: This black "box on the right on the picture was not shipped!! Is this part important to do the project? What is this for?

Thanks for the answear

Hi Corres
That's about the most important part, its around 6" x 6" x 2.5", and it's the DVD player(Sat Nav DVD Unit). They must not have taken it out of the loom before they took the picture!.
You will have to source the Sat Nav DVD Unit separately. It's actually a PC (possibly running Linux) in disguise and runs the whole system.
The hud at the front is just a display, you have the control panel (like the PC's mouse/keyboard), and the GPS sensor.
You will be breaking into the Audio system at the rear to connect the "PC's speakers" for the GPS voice.
Good luck as you'll have your hands full getting in all the wiring.
Lot's of people have looked at this out dated GPS system and just bought a modern $200 GPS Tom Tom unit. BUT, hey, the pop up screen is great!

PS Mine is not finished as I decided against connecting up the ABS and ECU sections as I had the warrenty to worry about.

hi corres
certainly could be, although i have not seen that, you would probably need to see the loomed laid out on the garage floor as if it was in the car... and compare it to the wiring diagram.
cheers

Hi guys!
Sorry for digging up this very old topic, but I have discovered it very helpful and I have felt like sharing some pictures from my DIY job.
My friend and me, we had two rx8's. One without the engine but with nice sat-nav system. Other one nicely ruining with fully reconditioned engine without sat-nav.
We had a big problem as our runner's wiring looms did not had wires for sat-nav, but we took all the looms from our non runner.
So for all you thinking about punting stock nav in your rx8 here are some photos, just so you can realize how much effort this require (it might be 6h job if your car have all the wires, if it does not, prep yourself for good 50 hours).
As I can not upload photos, link will have to suffice:

If you have any questions, dont hesitate to ask
