One thing this DIY lacks to mention.. make sure you have a swivel head for your socket wrench! Makes life a lot easier. That front rotor leading is damn near impossible to grab (if seized) with out a swivel head. Can't believe how much better the car runs after just a simple coils/plug/wires change.

Thanks for this (old) diy. Just ordered the plugs. On sale on Amazon, $61 for the set! Just bought the car and it just feels like it could be doing better. I'll start with the plugs and possibly replace the coils and wires soon after.

Go to your nearest autoparts store. Purchase plugs. 2 Leading and 2 Trailing. They will indicate on the plugs with a T or an L- that tells you leading or trailing. Since it seems as if you have very little knowledge of this car. Jack up the drivers side. Remove tire. Remove ONE plug wire at a time. Remove plug behind that wire. Install new plug MAKE SURE THEY ARE TORQUE'D. Now you should be replacing the wires at least with this and depending upon the age of your coils they should also be replaced. But i'll assume your just going to do the plugs. So after you install the new plug put the plug wire back on, make sure they are snug. Move on to the next plug. Now if you were replacing everything making it all shiney and new i would suggest Di Electric grease. But i wont get into that. Anyway, enjoy what im assuming is your first time.

Just wanted to say THANK YOU very much for the DIY! I bought a 2004 RX8 today for $2400 that was a non-runner. I changed the plugs out with the factory Mazda NGK's and it runs and drives flawlessly! Thank you again!

Need help asap!!!
I have a 2007 Mazda RX-8 that I did my normal ingnition coil, spark plug wire and spark plug change out. I have done this several times since purchase and have not had an issues. Being in a rush and being stupid I cross threded all 4 plugs and now I can not get it started . I brought it to the dealership and they told me that it needs a new motor. The quoted me $4100 for the motor and $2000 for the labor.
I was wonding what your thoughts are. Would the aluminum thread scraps that got into the rotor housing cause scarring and rendor the motor useless?
Any thoughts anyone can lend would be greatly appericated as I love my car and can not beleive I need to replace a motor for some aluminum threads that got into the housing.

...I cross threded all 4 plugs...
Do you think you really got much in the way of shavings in the engine? Try pointing a compressed air nozzle into the leading plug hole, rotating by hand to new positions so you'll get all three chambers. (Trailing hole has a very small orifice at the bottom.) Shavings might blow out. Can't imagine shavings being very big, but you never know what may cause damage. Then you need to fix the threads.
You might be able to fix the threads with a spark plug thread chaser. Put some grease on it so you'll catch any new shavings.
If a chaser won't work, you can try helicoils. You can get a DIY kit with the right size drill or reamer, tap and coils. You'll need to be ****, making sure everything is square as you work. Grease the reamer/tap to catch new chips. Google "Helicoil" and you'll find lots of kits and DIYs.

Dang dude. Gotta admit that's the first time I've heard of someone cross threading all of them. It's kinda a shot in the dark, but I've used a pipe cleaner coated with grease to grab shavings before. And as already stated, chase or helicoil

According to Mazda, the correct torque for spark plugs is 10-13 ft lbs (114-156 in-lbf). But according to NGK, the torque for a 14mm thread diameter plug, like the OEM RE7CL, in an aluminum head is 18.0-21.6 ft lbs.
I wrote to NGK asking them which to use and this was their reply. Thoughts?

Thank you for contacting us! For warranty purposes you will want to torque to NGK specs which I would recommend 18 ft lbs.

Frankly if you are a Rotary Engine owner you should not be asking such basic questions.

Enrique, welcome to RX8 Club and our famous brand of hate for noobs (and everyone else).
As you get your hands dirty, don't be afraid to ask questions, but be warned: if anyone has ever asked that question before, and it was answered, then you will get trolled for not having searched. Even if you search and don't find it, someone else will most likely go through the effort of advanced searching for you, just so they can take pleasure in it. It's kind of neat, actually, like old-fashioned librarian service.

Just wanted to add in here a big BIG thanks to everyone who has contributed to this tutorial, especially the OP. With the help of my much smaller friend, a trip to his house for tools i was missing, red bull and other caffeinated beverages, we finished this at about 3am (Starting at about 1230am) Ended up not having the right socket for the spark plugs, it was a 13/16 deep well with a 3/8 drive I needed.
the spark plugs had almost no torque to them, i read that they should have about an average of 15, which is definitely not what i'm used to. plugs were definitely at end of life.
upon test driving, low end throttle response (between 1k and 5k) were MUCH quicker and evened out with high end RPM (5k-9k) before hand it took some effort to launch the car properly, now i can get that ***-end fishtailing from a start lol.
last note, did not need a swivel for anything.

What else do I need when replacing the spark plugs
I'd like some help here. My car is due for spark plugs (On top of that I flooded the engine and tried to de-flooded but no luck ). I was advised to remove the spark plugs (though they need to be replaced) will it be okay to do the change before trying to deflood the engine? It's been sitting in my carport for 5 days now, will it do any harm, and this weather, i feel like is not helping (30 F).
When replacing spark plugs what else do i need other than the tools? should i do coils? is that the same as the wires? Please help this woman that is not fond of riding 6 miles onway on her bike in this freaking cold weather .
Thank you!

Hi there.
It's recommended that all 4 plugs, wires, and coils be changed as a set every 30k miles aa a maintenance item.
I deflooded mine once with new plugs, one was carboned over so bad it couldn't spark.
