At 41,000 miles I changed the plugs. Def invest in a wobble adaptor for the rear trailing plug. I also used two extensions (an 8" and a 10").

Just for whoever may have trouble getting plugs out, a single wobble extention, as short as possible, with no swivel on the socket is more rigid, giving you better torque on the plug.

Good advice, this morning I ran up to redline a couple times and the CEL flashed. I knew I hadn't tightened the plugs as tight as usual. Didn't take the driver wheel off again, just turned the wheels all the way to the right and with a very short wobble extension gave them a little snug, problem solved.
This was the first time to change plugs on the 8, I was worried I'd snap the porcelain if I got them to tight. I've broke plugs a few times on old rx7's in the past.

Ok so this Diy is great but i have a problem. 2006 rx8 80k miles MT. The car has been idling rough, obvious loss of power, so i decided to start with plugs n coils. Just changed the plugs today...car wont start? FYI The plugs were badly fouled, smelled like gas, and some rusted near the boot connection. I ensured the trailing and leading plugs were installed correctly, my battery is fine ( tried to jump it, still nothing), alternator is fine. Not a newbie to cars but new to the 8. I have been searchin through the forum for info but havent seen anythig regarding starting problem after plug install. Any suggestions? Bad coils perhaps?

Unfortunately you're leaving out quite a bit of useful information for us to diagnose this.

The most important troubleshooting questions no matter what you're dealing with... "What happens when you try?"

You say the car no longer starts. Well, there are quite a few failure modes for a car not starting, each exhibiting different symptoms. Is the car cranking at all? If not, is there a constant clicking? Is there absolutely nothing at all?

I'm sure the diagram of the plug wires is posted in this thread somewhere to search around for it and ENSURE you have each wire connected correctly. Also, ensure the harnesses are fully seated into each coil.

Did my spark plugs, just because I have a spare. 11,000 miles with 35,000 miles on ignition coils, and have used TC-W3 premix since I got the reman' engine. I've put in mew coils, plugs, started using idemitsu premix. I'll pull these out a year from now or when I hit 15,000 miles.

May be this task isn't for you to do. Leading is on the bottom. Trailing is on the top. Did you read the DIY? It's titled for that reason... Go back to page one!

I have changed my coils and plugs before (great help from this fourm) and there was some tedious restarting procedure I had to go through, but it worked fine after that. Just change coils, wires and plugs -- (did not use that procedure [couldn't find it]), my car is hard to start and dies when trying to idle... Can anyone help?

Try to reset the ECU with 20 rapid pumps on the brake pedal. One of the gauges (I think it's the temp) should sweep, then you know you're reset. Mine stalled after the last plug/coil/wire change and the reset fixed it. Mine wasn't hard to start, though.

Sure you can, its just the little bit sticking up there. If you haven't changed your plugs before, you may not have seen it but ours look quite different from a regular plug. We don't have that little elbow on the top like a piston engine plug. Google images "rotary spark plugs Ngk" and you'll see what I mean

Gear doesn't matter. Engine off, key position to ignition on. After 20 pumps, you will see the gauge sweep confirming the operation has been completed. After this, turn the key to the off position, wait 30 seconds (I think), then start the car.

Hi guys, for some older models, like my '04, the needle does not move.

My 04 does ( I do have a JDM model though which has a different PCM, not sure if that makes a difference though )

Models with manual trans. manufactured AFTER vin 40132647;
Auto. trans. AFTER vin 40132607;
OR vehicles updated to "L" calibration or later have needle sweep confirmation.
