I made three 2000 mile road trips in 3 months recently, throw in my 40 mile daily commute, and DIY oil changes became a PITA.
I decided to buy a Topsider oil extractor, and it's made my life much easier.

Especially an S1 with the filter up top.
It takes a good bit of pumping when it starts sucking air, but still easier than jacking it up every time, and that makes for more frequent 3000 mile oil changes rather than procrastinating.
It also comes in handy for my lawn mowers, pressure washer, and generator.

No, but it gives you plenty of important information in regards to doing so... The change itself is near common sense.

Well I raced mine the first year or two with an extra quart out of ignorance before realizing it was unnecessary and it never caused any issue at all; no puking, nada.

I tried to come up with a (bad) joke about overfill being overplayed here, but couldn’t

Hi everyone. I can't seem to get the nut off the oil pan. Is it because I haven't taken the oil filter off yet. I don't know if its the pressure or not.

Please let me know.

Thanks,

Chad

You could try striking the head of the bolt with something about that size to free it up, then use more leverage.

The topside oil vacuum pump is nifty, but at $63 I'd prefer to spend $$ on something more useful, e.g. ...........v

Amazon Amazon

With it car is up on stands in 2-4 mins., plug out, and draining. Now the lovely location Mazda chose to place the oil filter is another thing. I chose / recommend to reloc that and oil filter changes are a breeze ..........v

I ran a fumoto drain valve on the 8, and have run them in all my vehicles, might be worth looking into that if it doesn't bother you.

Are you sure you that you are removing the correct bolt. I live in the Boston metro area (but have an RX8 - Series 2) which as a different oil pan/bolt. Great video from a great guy (Ray Whitney) on oil change

I have a 2010 RX8 and am trying to do an oil change myself this time. I am unsure which is the oil drain plug as I don't see one on the side that is at an angle on the side edge (not straight vertical) as I see in the pictures. I know the pictures shown seem to be the earlier RX8s so maybe it's different. I see two straight up vertical bolts that I'm thinking one is the drain plug. One is in the middle towards at the back of the pan and looks like a regular bolt that i would use a ratchet or crescent wrench to remove. The other is in the middle on the right side edge of the pan and looks like an Allen wrench would be used.
I have not lifted my car so this is what i can see from the side.
Could anyone point me to where/which is the drain plug on the 2010 RX8?
Thanks

********SORRY....I see I posted this in Series 1 and I should have posted in Series II.

Engine oil drain plug is on the bottom of the oil pan, not the side. I think it’s an 8 mm Allen key head bolt. Make sure you have the correct oil filter for 2009 and newer. Higher oil pressure makes aftermarket filters not an option (typically for earlier years )- Mazda OEM is good and reasonably priced.

Thanks for the information and clearing that up for me. I didn’t realize there were those differences between pre-2009 and 2009 and later. I appreciate the info.

I think that you should let your engine cool down first and than make sure the oil drain from the oil filter.
