You guys can try that but remember that taking out the stock insulator reduced the noise???
It seems that putting stuff in there loads the stick against something.
Littlejohn has found results by lowering the white ring and thus the boot on the shaft. I made some longer white rings so it can go even further down but have not noticed anything different. I have a couple of those out being tested but no real feedback yet that shows an improvement.
If everyone keep trying things we might find some help. That's where the removal of the green fuzzy came from.
BTW, Dazygirl and Jenkins crew have you removed the green fuzzy??

Look back to post 64 of this thread. You can see the green cone thing in the boot. Remove. If you find a green fuzzy thing and it has legs please kill it.

I'm with Gomez... it seems very bizarre that removing insulation would reduce noise... has anyone removed this and found that it doesn't help? Can the removal procedure be reversed (just in case)?

Dazy baby, just try it. everyone else has and it works. In fact I'm trying to think of something to do with all those green things left over. Probably can't as I've been trying to find something to do with all the 35mm film cans for years now. Same problem of waste going to waste. :D

As one Texan to another Dazy... I assure you it works... its just that green fuzzy stuff ... VERY easily returned to stock...
The sound will still be there... just greatly reduced...

My faith in Gomez and Richard Paul has paid off. :D There is almost no sound at all now coming from the shifter. The noise used to be noticable when going from gear to neutral, especially second gear, but now it's quiet and seamless.
I still don't get how it works, but that's why I'm a liberal arts major. :p

Anyway glad it worked for you and it confirmed what I had already heard. It's just that we need to test stuff done down under because gravity works different there. Thus it effects the brain in a strange way.

Great DIY. I love the short shifter. The car feels right now. In fact I am a better driver with the shifter, I am in "no mans land" so much less. The car feels right. best purchase ever.

I installed mine the other night.
I have had the console off numerous times before, so that was no problem.
Took less than 20 minutes to install, and it took me that long cause I had to remove my LCD screen and stuff:

Very short, and feels much more precise.
It is NOT as smooth as the stock shifter, but more notchy and kinda stiff. Overall I like the feel of it though.
The gear noise doesn't bother me either. I'm the kinda guy that likes a little bit more noise (just think of it as communication with the car), so IMO that's one of the best parts of the shifter. It's just a really cool sound, plus the "ca-chunk" when you shift really fast that the stock shifter didn't have quite so much.

I've got good news for you Got m4xx 21 - the shifter gets smoother after a few months. I had mine installed in April and it was pretty rough at first. Now it's as smooth as butter. :D Have you tried removing the green stuff? It lessens the cabin noise (even though you like it :D ).
