i dont know how to reset the PS, but i did disconnect the battery and still nothing. i paid for the diagnosis at the dealership and was told the ECSP module wasnt returning electrical signal and it needs to be changed for $1400. after that they ll see if anything else is wrong .what do you know about the ECPS?

No need to add electrical wire, after cutting off the plug, just bring the electric wire and solder.

There is no problem to cut this connection because there is another lower.

 

Search the site for the correct PS Reset procedure. It's easy, but I don't remember the exact sequence. Basically, you disconnect the negative battery terminal for a couple of minutes, reattach it. The PS warning light on the dash should be blinking when the key is turned to the "ON" position - do not crank the engine. With the ignition switch ON, turn the steering wheel all the way left, then all the way right. The PS light should go out. I don't know for sure, but I think this sets the center position foe the PSCM.

 

I just bought my car and got this steering problem...i saw this threat and understood that I need to try cleaning out these connectors...BUT how do I remove the whole air intake box before I can find these connectors? Saw some Youtube videos which they only remove it to replace the filters...

 

The same process. Once you have the housing of the air filter removed, you will need to use a 10 mm(may be a 12 mm) socket wrench to remove the two bolts at the base and two above of the air filter box tray. When that is out, you will see the wires to your left next to the coolant reservoir's descending coolant hose , the EPS wires run between the middle of the fans shroud.

Study the links to my pictures(which includes the battery and the battery tray removed) below. If you notice the wet spot just below the reservior(aka overflow tank), that is one of the primary reason in this thread why the EPS fail, it will be more common as our car age.

 

NEED HELP!!! I followed everything in this DYI, It worked for about a week... then power steering went away completely.. I ordered new harness and put it in today. Still doesn't work?!?!?! Anyone have ideas? As to what it could be??? I also have checked the EPS fuse, its still good! Any help would be appreciated! The power steering light also comes up, upon start up.

 

Since you've replaced the wiring harness to the rack & torque sensor, you should look at the harness to the PSCM. It's the hardness that connects the rack/torque converter hardness to the control module located in the ECM box at the front left of the engine compartment.

I assume that your cleaned the connectors under the air box when you installed the new hardness? You should also clean the connector to the PSCM. If cleaning doesn't fix the problem, you will have to replace that hardness or run new wiring.

You might get the "stock" answer to replace the rack and that may be required, but I prefer to eliminate the cheapest options first.

 

Is there a diagram somewhere that can help me locate the PSCM Connectors? Or is it all a matter of following the wires, from the rack/torque converter?

 

Do you know where I can buy those pscm connectors? I looked everywhere?

 

remove the air filter box. It's on the center of the cross bar that runs under the box and above the radiator fans.

hi guys, im having issue with my steering wheel too,

Would like to try this out, would it be any different in accessing the connectors if my car is a RHD(rightHandDrive)?
Im a female, and not sure if i can get this working.

i sent my car for water pump & crankshaft seal replacement and it came back with a fault in the steering wheel. Did the mechanic somehow messed up by spilling coolant or etc, that cause the fault?
or it could be just pure coincidence that the fault happened when they were replacing my waterpump *crankSeal?

 

The engine on my 2004 RX-8 with 75k miles failed, so I just got a Mazda reman put in. Two days after getting my car back this weekend, my power steering fails. So I pop the hood and pull out the EPS fuse to check it. It's fine and I put it back in, and my power steering works again. I drive home, and after a few hours, try to start the car, and the power steering is out again. So I try the same thing: pop the hood, pull out the EPS fuse, and put it back in. Works again!

As far as I can tell, there are only two states of my power steering:

(1) It is on at startup, works with no problems, and no noticeable issues at all.

Or,

(2) It is NOT on at startup, and does not work at all, with steering in completely unassisted manual mode.

It hasn't failed while driving, or failed a few seconds after startup, or anything. It either works at startup or it doesn't. I'm curious if this fuse-popping "solution" works for anyone else? I'm sure it's no different than disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it, except that popping the fuse will only affect power to the EPS.

 

Or you could check all your wires and clean the connectors.
Cuz that's a thing..

Rather than "resetting" the problem, fix it.

Old thread but I have fought this problem for over a year. Replaced the lower steering harness. Cleaned connectors every month or so, wire tied the connector to the steering mechnism. Got fed up this weekend and used a paper clip to release the 3 pins of the upper connector. Did a quick solder flow where they are crimped and reconnected it all. This is the first time in years that there is no shudder when backing up and turning or slight hesitation when passing the 0 point from right to left. If this is the final fix.. I might even keep ole red pass 200K miles! (of course, 2nd engine)

 

Can you please make a video, i used both products on each one (besides the one in the last picture) and got no results. not sure if i was suppose to let the lubricant settle or some other reason but it just didn't work.

 

Just thought that I'd provide a "long term" update on the status of my PS fix. Since my last post describing my repair, my PS has been working flawlessly. In my case I am convinced that the issue was in the electrical connections in the wiring harness.

The combination of increasing the mechanical "scrub" in the connector by using a "V" bend, plus securing & sealing the connectors has provided a reliable fix.

 

I've tried everything on this thread to clean the connectors and nothing worked. I clean them several times, I would get PS back for about a week before it went out again and that time slowly progressed to 1 drive before it went out. I took the power steering rack out today and plan on pulling it apart to see what more clean.....I WILL get to the bottom of this!!!!!


UPDATE!!

Pulled the rack out and was a little surprised once I got into it. I took the 4 bolts off for the electric motor part of the rack. I could only pull the outer housing back an inch and half or so because stuff inside the rubber boot would have to be removed to take off the housing completely. I just cleaned what I could of the electric motor with some electric cleaner spray and put it back together. Proceeded to undo the big bolt under the torque sensor and found what is shown in the pictures. The factory grease was solidified and broken down. I just removed what I could of the old grease and put new grease in the shaft as shown and even added a shot of royal purple gear oil in there. Needless to say it did loosen the rack up a little bit for easier turning but the powersteering light keeps coming on followed by no PS(still have intermittent PS loss, so it comes and goes). Next I am going to try to rebuild the wire harness to the PS rack. I am going to take off the plastic sheath around old wire, inspect and replace it with new wire. Going to cut the old wire at the connectors and solder in new wire of the same AWG. That probably won't fix it but dang it I am going to try everything that doesn't have to do with spending a fortune at the dealer or anywhere else to fix it. I have also replaced the PS module where the ecu is and still didn't fix it

I dont really understand this part? ''7: Directly under the main pulley is the power steering motor, with a connector on it. It is a lot easier to remove the connector with the Zip tie removed, so have a replacement available. Clean like step 4''

Where is it exactly located at?
Also, How do i disconect that part?

Do i just add the di electric grease otusdie the connectors or inside?

Hi is it possible That My steering harness is causing my problems with (abs light coming up,lost of odometer and speedometer).
About a month ago I got cleaned up The steering Connections that are shown here and codes Erased my 8 Worked just fine for a week then the problems came back.


I'm thinking of changing My steering Harness. But just wanna At least Have some input if it is possible this may be causing the issue.

 

Do you guys know why my steering wheel would work when my car was parked for a long day or night then i would drive it and it was working then i would park it then turn it on again and bam it was out again but suddenly it stopped working at all.

 

Because the system does a quick check on the signals from the torque sensors on startup. Inconsistent signals would cause it to work sometime and not others. Follow the procedures others have listed for cleaning the connectors under the airbox. If that doesn't correct it, the connectors need to be disassembled (pins pulled out) and soldered where they crimp on the wires.

 

My power steering kicked off and been looking for solutions up and down every site. Drove it w/o pwr steering for a whole year. This was Six years ago. Had car in storage for five now. After a new battery, oil change, i strapped it to my truck n towed it around for about a km. let er sit for a week, and just today put some premo in the tank, (left tank empty thankfully) and she started up beautifully. Drove it for 10k n she purrs like a well oiled kitten. I reset the dsc light.. And now just have the power steering issue to resolve. But this comprehensive DIY sounds real promising, cant wait to bring car home from storage and try this out. Thank you very much for this post. I'll check in about a week with my results.
