DIY: Paint Oem rims
DIY Paint OEM Rims
This is my first DIY for anything and first time spray painting.
My resources were

First gather supplies
Oven for rims (recommended)
Steel wool Assortment Pack (Wal-Mart)
Automotive Sandpaper (Auto parts store)
Krylon Primer (Your choice I got white)
Dupli-color Wheel coating (Graphite, clear coat, and Black)

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...3/HPIM0090.jpg
1st step wash rims I bought mine from another RX8club member cornholio 135 so tires were off hope to find good wheel place where they wont scratch my rims when it comes time to put tires on.
Second step Scuffing rims this being my first time doing it I just worked my way down on the assortment packs of sand paper and steel wool. Here is pic if you can see scuffs maybe I should of done more but it came out alright.

Third step now wash rims again and ensure they are completely dry. Hint my first mistake was not flipping rims to facilitate the holes on rim of draining of all water.
Now its time to primer I did three coats a coat every ten minutes no need to bake. I let it sit for about two hours and went to dinner.
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...3/HPIM0057.jpg
Forth step Color of your choice instruction says two thin coats and one medium coat so I did just that. Ill show you every coating.
1st coat missed alot
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...3/HPIM0061.jpg
2nd coat little better
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...3/HPIM0064.jpg
3rd coat hope I got it all
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...3/HPIM0068.jpg
Now to bake at 300 degrees for oven that wont close and 200 for one that will.
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...3/HPIM0073.jpg
After baking. Let rim cool for 20 minutes
Fifth step Clear coat same instructions as color tip wipe down to remove any dust or particles I did mine and found a hair to late hardly noticeable. Recommend you do it in day mine went into the night and light made it hard to see where I missed.

3rd coat held to lamp so I can see where we missed.

Bake for 10 minutes let cool for 20 minutes.
And now the finished project

I did center cap without baking and painted mazda emblem black no chrome on my car so I figured it would look good.

Hey, I saw this while I was perusing things to do to my car. I have a bit of curb rash ( sad face ) and read through your linked resources. Sounds like it should be an easy fix, time consuming, but easy. Why do you bake the paint on? Just curious. Does it make it more durable? I noticed you went for Wheel Paint (obvious choice) but do you have any comments on why not use the "Engine Paint" that someone else claimed to be more durable? Thanks for the great DIY!

Nope

I had a friend that painted his OEM wheels, They looked nice but the paint did not last at all. It chipped and flaked around the rim section and hub bore and didn't look too good after a while on the car.
But you took a more "professional" approach by dismounting the tires and doing some good surface prep, so yours may hold up differently.

dont hate...just rotate!!
ive done this before.. on my rx8.. and it took me about 3-4 days to do.. well worth the wait though.. they lok awesome!! but they need a new coat of clear.. its been bout a year since ive done it. and theyve held up well against chipping and rocks.. the paint i used was the flat black at any store for my primer and i used black engine enamel for the base coat.. i repeated this back and forth until i reached the desired look i wanted.. then i cleared them. I couldnt figure out how to get the pic on here.. but go to the link to see them.

Anyone know what's a good color to match the original OEM rim color for touch-ups? I'm planning on remounting the summer rims soon and would like to repair the scratches and gouges before I do.
