a little tip as i have done TONS of spray painting. go for the back and inside of the rim first. just 2 coats doesn't have to be anything special as more paint will cover as you coat the front. once completed turn over and paint the front. start out with all of the hard parts first. the lug bores. and the small holes on the front.save the top or face for last.it's the easiest.

prep work is simple. don't sand too ruff, just scuff the surface and make sure it's super clean. you can use degreaser and brake cleaner but then use lots of water and dry with compressed air. personally i don't use clear but thats a personal choice, like using condoms.

sorry im late. but i did it the hard way.. i painted all the rims black and let them dry for like 4 hours, then went and taped off the inside of the rim around the lip. using newspaper to cover the majority of the inside. then i sprayed the lip red. and let it sit like 24 hours..

and it took me 2 cans of black, but a third would have helped..

dupli color wheel paint had a powder effect and wiped off with my finger after 3 coats and showed the primer also ur supposed to use primer that matches close enough to the color ur painting and wet sand after you primer the wheel for a smoother look, the issue is make sure the can is well shaken (of course) and i set it in front of a heater for 5 mins, worked good after that, but its not worth the hassle, rust oleum sells the same color and cheaper! Oh and i used 1 can per rim, trust me it help you out in the long run

Has anyone seen a DIY on how to get a good looking stripe around the outside edge of our rim? I want to set off the black wheels so that it dosnt just look solid black in moving pictures and you can see the wheel and tire.

I just painted my rims this weekend and the results were great! I followed many different sources but wanted to thank the OP for his DIY.

A few words of my own advice for future painters.

It took one can of paint for each wheel. I used 8 cans total. 4 gray primer and 4 gunmetal. These 8 cans gave me two medium coats of primer and 4 coats of light gunmetal per wheel.

Also went with 220 grit sandpaper because 320 wasnt available at pep boys. The can of Duplicolor suggested 320 so I would go with that.

If anybody has any further questions toss them my way.

Index cards only work if its not windy out. I started off using index cards but even if I taped them down they seemed to get caught in the wind and blow around. I just masked everything and used a trash bag around the tire.

i just called a powdercoating place in San Diego and they quoted me $75 per rim... wondering if that is a good price. didnt really understand him at the end but i think he said 400-450 for all the rims and with balance and rotation. looking to go gloss black...
