Is it already flooded?
I think you would be ok to do the tune up and then if you needed to, deflood it.

Or, Or, people could just hold the key on start long enough for the car to start. Im not sure why this is so complicated. And no, Youwonder, i wouldnt bother deflooding the car before or after. Do whatever tune up you're going to do and then start the car normally.

Deflooding is the process of solving a flood. If there is no flood, "deflooding" is nothing more than "taking a long time to start".

I know this. My rx8 flooded out on me once. because i let someone else start it, and they didnt hold on the starter long enough for it to actually fire up. (weak motor, starter spins like 300rpm) and i talked them through deflooding it, press the gas to the floor, crank for a couple seconds, let of, rinse repeat twice, then start it normally.

Flooding won't stop the engine from spinning. Cranking and turning both mean spinning the engine.

Tempted to just pop the clutch but the car is in a good spot to work on so I figure I might as well learn how to do this assuming I still have a motor hehe....
Lets see I pulled the fuel pump fuse didn't work, did the whole depressed pedal deal didn't work pulled the connection on the top of the passenger strut didn't work. God knows if I'm doing any of these methods correctly. And to top it off there's allot of fuel in the air not sure if thats normal or not any advice on what I may be doing wrong?

BTW thanks for this thread its at least giving me allot of insight on what may be going on here.
My rx8 04 doesn't even crank, it just makes clicking sound. Although battery was fully charged. What do I do?

If it is clicking then I would start by looking at the battery connections and the connections at the starter.

Wouldn't hurt to check the battery voltage just to be sure...they can die quickly

"Just clicking...." means the battery terminals are loose.

Grab and twist, any movement is a bad connection.

(It's ALWAYS the battery terminals.)-----I'm making this my new signature.

it is not a stupid question, I think it tends to happen when you drive less than 1-2 miles distance, the fuel gets stored in an engine if you don't accelerate until 3-4k rpm before shutting it down. That's what I was told by other rx8 owners.

Thanks so much for the inf bro...Yea this car is only driven 15 to 20 minutes every other day after a proper warm up and cool down. Only 44K original. And I read about the flooding and was wondering why it would happen in a car like this. I am going to just burn through the full tank and then change Coils wires and plugs along with a Seaffoam......any good coils and plugs and wires you recomend?

Thanks brother..

Spent this weekend following Service Bulletin No: 01-015/08, and still wouldn't start. Tried this process and it worked as described. Great DIY. Thanks.

This is the 2nd time in 12yrs the car flooded, both times from weak battery and the first time it was towed in for warranty service. Thanks again.

Is this the same process for an Automatic? 2009 Specifically.

Not 100% sure, but I don't see why not.

WY Deflooding / The Patience Method

Re flooding: I did the whole washer fluid in the ports fix a few years ago...but this time found this very basic YouTube from Ray. Call it the Patience Method. After 10 cycles of 10 sec crank/60 sec pause it almost started. Patience. Ran through 8 more cycles and tada! This is so much simpler than other methods but it does take some time. Don't rush it.

First time flooded, ugh

Took our 2004 RX8 in for minor clutch pedal work, carefully & thoroughly explained why & how not to flood it... shop calls - clutch fixed, but hey... it won't start now!!!
Head bangs against phone.
So in a few hours will try the procedure to deflood, thank you so much for posting.
Stupid question - once it starts & is running... do you then walk over while still running & connect the air pump back up? Or let it run awhile before reconnecting? I'd be scared to turn it off before having driven it a good 20 minutes or so to avoid going all the way back to Step Zero.
