I am not sure if there is a adavantage. i just did what my cousin told me to do if i ever flooded my engine (back in the days). since he was the one who gave me his FC for a graduation present from HS.

I had to deflood my car over the weekend.

I used Alfy28's method first, and then I tried Gatorfan1976's method after Alfy's.

At one point I went back and forth because it didn't want to start. Eventually she came back to life.

Thank you for yalls contribution in this thread.

So my car has been on bricks so to speak for about 3 months cuz I have been vigourasly working on it! So I tried to start it this past week and yea got nothing, so I changed the battery (duralast yellow top) and hooked it up to my friends car and started this process!

step 1: I disconnected both fuses and began cranking.
Continued to crank until the smell of gas was gone, then I put the fuses back in and cranked it tried rolling but it just couldn't get it over!

Step 2: disconnected fuses again and cranked until the smell was gone put fuses in again this time I put the pedal to the floor and it rolled over but shut off again

step 3: (repeat step 2) while I cranked I let the pedal go and the engine drank it up like water and I got it to start and it filled the atmosphere with crazy fumes but to me it smelled like victory!

Hope this helps anyone in my situation this DIY was an excellent help. I would say that what I learned was ur just basically drying out the engine then refilling it with gas if u think of this process like that u can't go wrong!

finally flooded...

pretty sure I've got weak coils and need new plugs... right at 30k and have replacements for both on hand.

Tried pulling the fuel fuse... that helped a little but ultimately the procedure that worked was the one documented in my 04 manual....

accelerator to the floor, turn on ignition, crank for 10 seconds

foot off accelerator, turn on ignition, crank for 10 seconds

It's just so much faster and easier on your starter to just push or pull start it and pop the clutch. I still don't understand why anyone tries any other method unless of course they have an auto. You'll be there a while if you do.

Took about an hour or so to do it by pulling the plugs. Lovely white smoke of success. I do encourage to take the time to cycle as much fuel out as possible. It will start first time then most likely. Also clean the plugs very well or put in new plugs. Plugs are about $20-$22 at most parts stores but will most likely need to be ordered. Dealership has them in stock at $40 & $60 each for the same ones. Hmmmm, markup?

Flooded my car yesterday, was pretty much fucked but thanks to this DIY got the car up and running within a few hours. Called AAA for a jump (batteries were dying as well), and used the crank method to get the car started up within an hour. RG's method woulda taken a lot less time and seems like an elegant way to determine if the car is flooded or something else went wrong, but it was hard to find a suitable area in my residential zone and the AAA dude told me that towing a car like that is apparently illegal (is this true? i live in cali).

Thanks everyone!!

technically towing is illegal in a lot of states (Texas too) but cops typically look the other way on account of most towing efforts result in getting dead cars out of active traffic patterns.

Idk why it would be illegal to tow a rx8 in cali. I had to pull my car out of the garage because the guy told me it was illegal for the tow truck to pull onto your driveway and get your car out of the garage but most tow truck drivers to it anyway, but I live in norcal and towed mine about 5 months ago the first time I flooded because everyone kept telling me that it wasnt possible that it was due to flooding so had to fork over $135 and it was due to flooding but ehhhh you live and learn so this time i knew it was flooding and this DIY was awesome! Thanks you saved me another $135 but did take bout 12 times so bout 30 mins or so.

Thanks for the thread!!The Mazda dealership (thieves) wanted to charge me $600.00 dollars for new coils and that wasn't including the time to do the work. I replaced the spark plugs & coils myself and the car still wouldn't start. Everybody kept on trying to tell me it was my started, but I knew better. I saw your thread and thought for sure this was the final piece to my dilemma. I followed your steps and after 2 & half hours my car started!!! I only did one thing different and that was....I added fuel injector cleaner to the gas. FINALLY after 3 months of bullshit, my car was up and running. The only crazy thing was my car was accelerating by itself and my gas pedal wasn't being recogonized?! The car would idle at 2 RPM's & then when the engine warmed up the car would rev up & down by itself?! It was crazy!! Nevertheless, I let it run for about 45 min & after the smoke cleared (no kidding) I turned off the car & restarted it 3 different times and then the accelerator started working. I took my car for a loooong ride & it's running better than it did when I bought it 5 years ago!! I'm was stoked and happier than pig in ****!! Thanks again!!!

Hi Guys & Girls
I have been reading over your threads and they are all really really great however my problem is as such,

Im only 17 just passed my driving test and wnated to get my car out to take it for my first drive, In order to do this i had to move my dad's Rx8 (he is currently away on business for a month) i moved it just of the drive onto the pavement and turned the engine of,

Now it wont start and i think its because i did the cardinal sin of moving it and turning it off stright away resulting in a flooded engine or something,

Your threads are great but i dont know my left from my right when it comes to where everything is in the Rx8 and i want to fix my Dads car before he fixes me

Has anyone got a video of how they performed the de-flood operation or pictures to go with everything

Any help would be great, thanks guys & girls

don't even think about it. you'll poke your eye out kid. call dad and fess up.

seriously if you can't follow directions like- hold the peddle to the floor and crank for 10 seconds then stop- without a video then you shouldnt try.

If you're in an area where some of our members are perhaps one or two of them will be nice enough to come over and help you out. what city are you in?

make sure your parental units know that strange people you have only spoken to on the internet might come over to help.

Okay...long story shorty I flooded my car a 2004 Mazda RX8. The car had been sitting for 2 days i went to take it out then decided not to all in 20 secs. The next morning to go to work then it no workie. I got new plugs and wires. Took the old plugs out and they were soaked. Swaped the plugs it just spun. Then i took the plugs out and disco'd the fuel pump and turned it over to get the fuel out. Plugs back in nothing just spun. Pulled the plugs again soaked. Enough fuel in them were i could sling the fuel out of the plugs. I had the car hooked to my 4Runner charging the entire time. Finally gave up. I left the plugs out to give it time to dry out will this work. Im hoping it gets hotter out this week so it will dry out. Need help how can get the fuel out the engine. I have my 4Runner and my R1 and R6 to take to work so i can afford to let it sit for awhile. Im wondering if the plugs are actually even getting a spark. can I use the old ones to put in the plug wire while they are out to se if im getting a spark? The stealership is about 45 miles from me. That would cost alot to get it towed there. Thanks for any help

im goin to try this after work today and pray it works... my last option before the stealership would be to pull it till it starts.

Check to see that you are getting a spark on the plugs. Id keep trying to dry out the engine (keep the plugs out & crank w/ the pedal to the floor.

After this, try starting it while having a friend spray starter fluid direct into the intake

Sorry but the only way i remeber trying to see if the plugs sparked was by having one in the wire while it was out of the car. Hopefully i don't get shocked

You'll be fine... I taped mine down to the intake with some masking tape so I didn't need to hold them. Even if you do, it doesn't hurt too much :p

Quick question regarding the correct fuse to pull for this...

On my shinka, there are three fuses related to 'fuel'...

1) Fuel Pump (one of the smaller fuses)
2) Fuel Injection (another smaller fuse)
3) A large fuse that the inside lid of the fuse box cover labels as 'Fuel'

(sorry, I don't have the manual with me to rattle off the position numbers)

Which one should I be pulling? I'm assuming it's either 1 or 3 (or both).

Thanks in advance!
