I don't think the previous owner of my 2005 RX-8 changed the stock cabin filter which is great because it made switching it out for the Aldehyde Filter that much more rewarding.

Thank you very much for the easy to follow instructions.

Yeah mine used to look almost like that as well. When I made the aldehyde filter, I was amazed as well how much of an improvement it was!

thanks for this...it was so easy. Even simpler cuz mine didn't have the slider from the first part of the instructions.

Well after having the catalytic converter replaced under warranty, the dealer recommended replacing plugs, air filter, cabin filter, etc, etc, etc. I did the plugs today and very easy with the DIY in this site ... less than an hour. I decided to look a little further at the cabin filter and found this post. Thanks much as this too was easy to check - I found that I had a prior resident in there as there was a lot of the insulation from the engine compartment jammed on top of the filters. The culprit was not still there thankfully and all was cleaned up. I'll order the new filters tomorrow for sure!

My thanks to all that contribute to the issues on this site!

Just looked at my filters out of curiosity today. They were horrible, dirt, dust, leaves, pebbles, etc etc. It looked like someone literally poured onto the filters because they were filled to the rim in thick dirt. I banged them out on the driveway and it looks like someone left a shovels worth of dirt on the concrete. I threw them back on since I dont have replacements now.

Weird thing is, I have allergies to a small degree but I have never noticed anything unusual about the air coming from the vents. No smell either. Just a bit less cooler air when not in recirculation mode, but thats the case with any car.

idk if this is correct or not.
on my older car Maxima, the filter filters out everything doesnt matter if youre in recirculation mode or not.
idk how it is on the rx8 I think the filter is used all the time.

update:
I just checked the service manual, the filter filters the air all the time no matter what circulation mode its in. which means when you turn off the recirculation mode, the air still goes thru the filter along with the junk on it.
and also service manual states that the filter should be replaced every year.
Ive ordered new filters. just dont feel like breathing in air thru these dirty 2 year old filters.

Thanks for this write up!

I have the left overs from some sort of varmet that was living in the car ber I got it. Sounds like acorns ratteling around everywhere when I turn the HVAC fan up.

Will post pictures.

yeah my filter looked just like post #101. Must not have been replaced by previous owner. Also had some of the engine compartment insulation in it. Was trying to figure out how it got there. Replaced it a few weeks ago. The manual shows you how to do it too.

^ the critters got to my firewall insulation and deposited same on the exterior side of the CAF a few years back. I used an electronic rodent deterrent last winter with excellent results. I placed it under the hood where my battery tender was also located/powered.

Just in case anyone's interested, Amazon has these Purolator filters for $19 after rebate. I ordered two so they should last me a while.

Changed mine recently, car's always garaged so they really weren't too bad. Anyway, got them on Amazon for $15.84 for a box of two with free shipping.

Amazon Amazon

The page is a little confusing, makes it looks like you need to order two, but you don't, there are two filters in a box. Ask me how I know. Doh! hahaha

I just replaced mine using this DIY. Mine looked just as bad as the pic form #101. The more I dig into this car the more I realize the previous owner did not take care of the car.

I opened mine today and i was shocked to see what all things it had on it.. I went to buy another one but everything was closed as it is a weekend and because its a shitty city. So i cleaned my older ones with the cleaner cleaner in k&n charging kit and i was shocked, now looks like brand new..

I checked mine yesterday and they were really dirty. The main problem I had with this was air going slower trough the vents, and as I live in a place hot as hell (DR), it was a big issue for me.

I just cleaned them and the air flow is much better know. I'll be ordering my new ones pretty son.

Does the aldehyde filter considerably affect air flow?

Hello,

I changed mine last night, it looked like the picture above that ForestMist posted.

My Aircon is now making a loud ticking noise almost like there is a leaf stuck in it, it gets faster when you turn the aircon speed up. It sounds like those bicycle clickers people use to put on the spokes of their bikes.

I put my hand in and couldn't feel anything inside, also tried spraying it with compressed air but cant seem to find out what's making the noise. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do or how to remove the aircon fan?

Nevermind I figured it out. Theres 3 screws that hold this fan in and the power plug just pulls out. Then I cleaned the fan, put it back in and every things good
