why not oem to jdm for turbo?

Why not convert the OEM ECU to JDM and remove the catalytic and put the JDM GREDDY turbo kit? i know there is steering and stuff in teh way, but it woudl be a LOT easier than fixing the OEM ecu would it not? (or is there somen i dotn know...maybe teh JDM has thicker apex seals?)

You make it sound so easy. I'm not here to flame you, but please use the search, and maybe you'll find what you're looking for. Where did you get the notion the JDM RENESIS has thicker apex seals?

At least you're thinking.

...no he's not. JDM doesn't mean anything, unless you're talking Honda, old honda stuff. the States gets the best everything, this obsession with Japanese stuff is just unbelievable.

Well, no the JDM 13B had thicker apex seals did it not? also i know it sounded too simplistic, i was throwing the idea out to maybe be considered as an option to the problem taht all the american EPA challenged cars...not saying JDM is special, b/c saying my car is "JDM" or wat not means nothing to me...

Haha. :p

My suggestion is if you want a turbocharger, try looking around here, in the United States. I'm not being ethnocentric. For example, Garrett makes some kick *** turbochargers, and they're more available than anything you could find in Japan.

The Japanese market and US market ECUs are identical. The flashed program code is different - but that's encrypted, and requires a Mazda computer program to load, so only dealers right now can do this (and they won't load a non-US flash program). Yeah, you can buy an ECU from Japan that's already flashed, but that's very expensive and then you still have to recode your immobilizer so that your keys work with it!

Second - Japan requires catalytic converters for emissions controls, and their ECUs are programmed for the catalytic converters to be in place. Simply removing the cat would screw up your Japanese-programmed ECU, so you might as well just screw up your US one if you want to go cat-less!

Third - "I know there is steering and stuff in the way" - so what do you suggest, cutting and re-welding an offset in the steering shaft? Cutting and rewelding your JDM Greddy manifolds? :p No, buying a kit that doesn't physically fit and trying to make it fit is probably the most difficult way possible to get turbo power. This is an all-around bad idea!

Regards,
Gordon

I spoketo someone at Greddy this morningand they told me that theyre going to have their turbo kit on an Rx8 at some upcoming show this year andthat it should be for available by some time next year. Im surethis probably isnt news to anyone but sinceI havent been really following this stuff too much until now this is news to me. I amkind of excited about this after checking out the gains that the RE-AMEMIYA automatic JDM Rx8 made w/its turbo. AllI have to say about that is thank god. Youguys need to wait a little bit longer cause it lookslike turbo kits are around the corner. Hopefully by next year owners of automatics like me will get a littlemore respect around here

Personally, I'm going custom, and I plan on waiting a little while longer to get some of the quirks out of this engine.
