Turbo Timer Questions.

Well I have a stock 04. and I really want to get a turbo timer for my car. that way when i go somewhere i dont have to sit and wait a minute for my car to warm down a bit. anyone have one on there RX8's? and where did you put it? How hard is installation? Thanks for your help. OH and another things, my buddy has a 240 with an aftermarket alarm, and a turbo timer, but he cant lock his doors until the car shuts off, which is kinda lame. is this the same for the stock 8 alarm?

since you're stock and want cooling, why not get the cooling fan mod instead?

if your car is idling with the stock fan settings, your engine/coolant will actually increase in temp! The fans don't really do anything till it goes to 200+ degrees.

the turbo timer is meant to keep your engine running so that the engine oil circulates and cools down, instead of having it sit inside a hot turbo and cook... a problem you aren't going to have.

How will a cooling fan mod, help with the circulation of fresh oil through the motor like a turbo timer would? and how would that help if you were driving semi hard, then stopped somewhere? you wouldnt really need to shoot cooler air at the engine (however not a bad idea at all and definately in the future for me). Thanks for your reply.

coolant runs through the engine. It takes away the heat....

problem is, your radiator fans don't do much till it's over 200 degrees.

The cooling fan mod is about $150. It will activate the radiator fans at 190 degrees, and keep the fans on till the temp is at 180 or lower. This applies even when the car is moving. What you'll end up is engine temps about 20 degrees lower when driving around or stop and go traffic, and when you shut off your car, if the temp is still over 180 degrees, the radiator fan will continue to blow to keep cooling it down.

Racing beat also has a reflash that will do that, plus a little more hp, but it's $300 range, and you'll need to mail your car's computer to them.

Like I said, hot engine oil isn't really a problem. With a turbo the oil can cook which will cause it to gunk up. You don't have a turbo. Let the coolant do it's job instead. Best of all, you aren't going to waste gas for no reason.

I see, but how does the coolant flow without the engine running?

I may need to look into a reflash, hoever not being able to drive my RX8 for 7 to 10 days may be a problem, however I am going on a business trip for 10 days so that might be perfect.

I have had 11 turbo vehicles in my life, most of them modded in some fashion. I drive cars hard, but have never had nor will ever own a turbo timer. I would suggest investing in a decent set of electronic guages like Defi's etc to accurately monitor your oil temps and EGT's. The real trick is to simply make sure that you use good sense when driving the car and don't run it under boost right up to the point you shut it off. As long as you know your destination you can run it in cool-down for the last 3-4 miles and the flow of air through your oil coolers and radiator will help scrub off engine temps. Always use synthetics with turbos to keep from coking.

My syclone had 73,000 miles when I replaced the engine and the stock turbo had no end-play, coking, or seal issues and is still in the truck on the new engine with 103,000 miles... .

Just my .02 as someone fairly familiar with turbos.

thanks, I dont have a turbo, but I drive 80 to work and I work right off the highway, so I am really loking for the best possible cool down for the engine once i get to work.

Oh...sorry about that I was thinking you were headed for a turbo install I guess, but you just want something to help keep the oil circulating on hot shut down. My mistake. Yeah..I realize that everyone has different situations and needs, so it really comes down to what you think meets your requirements. I do think the racing beat flash option would be a nice way to go and get you more bang for the buck, and the coolant mod mentioned is another decent option worth considering. Either way I better understand your needs now and should be a more careful reader....
